I originally got started with this series back in the late 90s with RTK III, and recently picked up RTK VII for the PS2.

If anyone has played RTK VII i'd love to hear your input on the game and your stategies. Ive only had it about a week.

As with all of these games the graphics suck and the gameplay is "deep". Its obvious that KOEI puts all of its time and effort into the mechanics of the game and lets the presentation go to hell. I think this tends to put alot of casual players and first time players off. Plus which it is really hard to get used to the Chinese names. I can barely keep the better known characters straight and will always mistake Ma Chao for Ma Deng or Yaun Chao.

Anyway, I just wanted to recommend these games to anyone who is interested in a DEEP turn based strategy game. RTK VII immerses you on any level of the game. Some examples:

You can serve as a officer in another lord's army or try for the crown yourself.

You can fully develop your character throughout the game through training and tutoring.

Ultimate replayability.

Literally hundreds of in game characters.

The ability to create your own character, his family, his country, and his officers for any scenario.

Besides civilization, the ultimate "one more turn" game.

i finished my first game last night after finally backing cao cao into a corner and beating him down. my question is whether after winning you always get the same story line.

the one i received last night my character turned into a tyrant and his entire family was killed by huns from the north who attacked the great wall. is this the only possible outcome, or does it vary based upon your play style?

My friends and I used to play ROTKII on SNES so much that we knew all the main Leaders and main Generals and knew what year they would become available and what providence.....we never had a cheat book, we just gathered this info from playing the game so much.

Ending depends on how you fight your way to the top. If you've killed too many generals and enemy rulers (execute after battle), you'll most likely be branded as a violent ruler, and hence your dynasty will be short (usually the Toba Wei ending).

See above. ;)

There's one ending I know of that your dynasty will last for 300 years etc.

For each type of player you played (ruler, warlord etc), you'll also get a set of different endings... ;)

There're some good FAQs for RTK VII at www.gamefaqs.com ;)

RTK7? go with physically strong people.. it doesn't matter how smart you are in RTK7, as long as you're buff enough.. and you can charge..

RTK8 is best for playing as an indivisual
RTK9 is best for playing as a faction

is there a limit to the amount of items you can collect? it always seems as if I can no longer buy itmes after ive conquered about half of the provinces.

it really sucks because i dont like to appoint anyone aprefect unless his loyalty is above 85 and the only way ive found to jump loyalty is giving an item.

any input?

Loyalty no longer raises with gold or horses?

B'ah! I played at hard level. Can't even see loyalty... :p

You can raise their loyalty by raising their salaries... ;)

Not sure about items, but I almost never give items to my officers. There're only a limited no of items in the game anyway, so in the long term, it doesn't work much...

didnt know about the salaries thing, ill try that.

so far as ive seen only items (which includes horses) and salaries raise loyalty. you can give a gift of money to an officer, but that only raises your bond by 25-30 points. a higher bond leads to better loyalty in the long run, but doesnt give immediate help.

i use items pretty extensively in the early part of the game. a sword which adds 10 to your war can really help when your best general is at 82 war. treasure can jump someones loyalty by about 20 points, which may be necessary after capturing officers in battle. also some items give skills such a doctor, wile, scout, and invent. i always good to get those in the hands of strategic officers.

Try forging weapons and giving them to officers with low loyalty. This also seems to help. By raising salaries you are creating an economic burden on your country. In the beginning this is bad but once your empire is big enough and the economy is good raising salaries becomes viable. Another thing I do for low loyalty people is bond with them up to 100. At least if they do betray you then you have a chance to recruit them if captured in battle.

I love using items to boost loyalty as well. You have to have deep pockets but there are so many items to be bought. Check every turn for merchants and not just in one prefecture. Move around.

ROTK7 and the rest of the series is awesome. Deep game and one of the big reasons why I bought a PS2. :D
