I just wondered, is there anybody out there who have a meaning on the subject of editing the SMAC rules in 'alpha.txt'? Is this cheating?

In single player, unless in a controled conditions tournament, there is no such thing as cheating; you are redesigning the game to suit yourself. In multi player, of course, all players have to use the same rules, which would be the default for alpha.txt, plus a number of soft rules to prevent 'exploits'.

I 100% agree with you Lefty. I feel in single player, the user should play however they enjoy it the most. If that means playing an edited game, so be it. Some people like the "no chance of loss" games, while others like the "near impossible" one.

In multiplayer I think you should stick with the default rules and make gentleman's agreements with the other players to modify the rules.

Myself, I like dificultiy levels where I win about 80% of the time. It is more enjoyable for me when a win is not garenteed, but by the same token, it allows for mistakes.

I thought it would be silly to start a poll and not write my own opinion, so here I go..

I mostly agree with Lefty and Cracked: It's OK in single player (I play at citizen level, so I don't really ned to edit the rules, but it's still great fun to have size 50 bases and no maintainence cost for buildings, so I can roll over my foes in lightening fast campaigns!:tank:
