Hi all,

I have the originals of Alpha Centauri & Alien Crossfire for PC.
I want to install them on Windows XP SP2.
Can you foresee any problems with this, if so please do tell. I see there is a XP patch for Alpha Centauri, do I install it before or after installing Alien Crossfire?

Thanks
Alan

First, welcome to CFC!

Second, as I don't have SMAX, I can't tell you when to install the XP patch, relative to installing SMAX. What I can tell you, though, is that it should run fine on XP. I run SMAC on XP Home without any problems. Be aware of two things though:

1) You may get an error that says "cpu not supported." It's very common. Don't worry about it. It doesn't mean that the game won't play. If you get it and the game crashes, let us know. There's a fix that works most of the time.

2) SMAC is very addictive. Be sure to tell your family that you love them. You may not see them soon. ;)

Enjoy.

Hi again,

Can anyone help with the above question re when to install XP patch.

Thanks
Alan

I have the Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack which includes both Alpha Centauri and Alien Crossfire. As best I remember, I installed them and then patched the games. I downloaded both the Win 2000/XP Update and the Alien Crossfire v2.0 update, but I'm not sure if I had to use the latter--it depends on which version of Alien Crossfire you have. If you are afraid to install both games and then the XP Update, you could install just Alpha Centauri, patch it, boot it up to be sure it runs, then install Alien Crossfire. If the game won't run after that, you could just run the patch again. If it does run, check the version of Alien Crossfire to see if you need its patch.

You can download the patches from Firaxis.
