Russian Leader

I think Ivan the Terrible would be really cool as a Russian leader. They could make him appear in his traditional ultraconservative bloody fanatically religious tyrant outfit, the kind he wears on all those old engravings of him you see.

Ivan also exemplifies pretty well the bloody autocratic history of Russian government as well as Russian culture and Orthodox Christianity in the pre-Soviet period. I think diplomacy with this cruel and fanatical Tsar would probably be a lot more interesting than with some ugly British wet nurse who Firaxis is trying to push off as Catherine the Great. I hope you can change the names and images of the political leaders of the different nations, because in that case I'm definitely substituting Ivan in.

Stalin would be another good choice, not because he was that great a leader but because the exemlifies the autocratic tyranny of Russia and the attempts to modernize, with varying success, through government-sponsored industrialization fueled by terror. I think it would still be more interesting to use someone from the pre-Soviet period because Russian culture is a lot more interesting from then, so I say go with Ivan.

wow, the american leaders' topic gets 4 pages worth of comments while the germans with a respectable of two pages full

i vote for peter the great

hopefully we could edit these leaders as well, cause i'd change mine in an instant

well, i think russians wouldn't like to see stalin in this game...
am i wrong?
but i also can't remember that catherina the great was british... always thought she was german.
but of course she was a great conquerer and a strict, unfair leader (remember pugatschow).
err, but i'm for peter I, because i allways play with the russians and don't want to lead the world, by being represented with an image of such an old "piece of meat".
;)
why did they cut the female, male options?

I think the leader should have been Ivan the Terrible, complete with his cool clothes. He united a bunch of squabbling boyar fiefdoms into Russia, fought against the Mongols, and besides, Sergei Eisenstein made a really cool movie about him.

Sure beats Catherine the Great.

With her, I can imagine seeing morons like Alexander Potemkin as great leaders.

but i also can't remember that catherina the great was british... always thought she was german.

She WAS German, Firaxis just made her look like a senile British maid, that's all (have you seen her screenshots?!?)

Ivan the Terrible would be great - with that bloody religious fanatic hat and the long robe, maybe even little beady red eyes. Ivan united Russia, sure enough, albeit he did so by having a bunch of people ritually castrated, hung upside down by their bowels and devoured by wild animals (anyone seen 'Hannibal'?). You have to congratulate this guy on his sense of gruesome sadism - nothing any depraved Frenchman ever did lives up to it.

the great slut. But strong women leaders were not too common in that era. Ivan the Terrible or Peter the Great...

So good old Ivan did a few deplorable acts. He was Stalinesque at a time when Stalinism was more welcome. That was no reason for Firaxis not to pick him instead of Catherine the Un-Great.

And a correction to my previous post. It was Grigory Aleksandrovich Potemkin, not Alexander. His father's name was Aleksander.

Okay.
You know how the other factions in SMAC would use different rhetoric when speaking to and about other factions? You know how they could be altered for custom factions?
I wonder if that's a feature in CivIII?
I wonder how far it could be taken?
What if you're playing the Russians and you change your name from Catherine to someone else (like Stalin)? Could the AI respond accordingly, maybe even commenting on your genocidal practices? How cool would that be?
I'd play Rasputin!
Think there'll be a large number of custom Civs that are only slightly modified? I'm betting there will be.

Sure she was german. you're such a cute one, robbie.
yeah, i saw some pics.
:D
kinda irascible?
hey, just jokin around. ;)

probably those guys will be in the game:
newskij
shukow

what are your suggestions?

So who are going to be the "great leaders" who arise occasionally from the elite units? Do you think they will use some of the leaders mentioned above (Stalin, Ivan, Peter) or will they avoid the Tsars and use generals and other non-rulers? Maybe Alexaner Nevsky and Zhukov?
