Sadly, Grade "F" for Civ IV: Colonization

I feel rather lonely when I play the game. Like the above poster pointed out. The other colonies don't do much. I have a hard time gauging how well I'm doing. I find myself making stuff, selling stuff... Having this goal of building an army to defend against the Crown later on, but there's nothing on the map, in my surrounding, pushing me towards that goal. I have kind of stopped playing the game and regret spending the money on it right now. Civ IV is much more interactive, there is more of a sense of growing up for a purpose in it. It just seems in Col II I'm not too sure growing bigger has any use. It just feels like I'm meandering and I quit every game.

Also I got Europa Universalis III and Galactic Civilizations II and Baldur's Gate II as gifts last week and they are all much more involving. So that may be why I'm not playing Col II anymore.

but there's nothing on the map, in my surrounding, pushing me towards that goal.

I also felt a bit lonely and "empty" but I found a new cure for it.
What I set as a new goal is to ally with as much of the native tribe's as possible. So this means alot of trading, giving goods away for free and sharing the peace pipe with sitting Bull. Now I tend to enjoy my surroundings and native lands alot more. And the benefit is that I got numerous native troops supporting me when I declare independence. I like to do this as the French which suits this kind of role-playing.

Is this because the other AI's aren't as aggressive as they use to be, or lack of diplomacy options? A larger map with more people (you can add tons of people now)

Kinda just curious about what you think makes this lonely and "empty" feeling, and how to fix it?

Oh.. Also I got to say it, maybe you should just get a dog  (LOL kidding)

More a lack of diplomacy and some nice flavourful events. In the original col there was always the chance that you would get dragged into a war with your neighbour just because there broke out a war in Europe. So you could play nice neighbours one turn and be enemy the next turn.
Also the fact that some nations never give an open border agreement means less trading with them = more empty feeling.

And why the native's never come to me to trade ? Why do you alway have to go to them, are they not curious about their new neighbours ?

And I really would like to see some events, I mean they were added in Civ4, why did they took them out ? Look at a mod like Fall from heaven, its full with events and it definitely adds to the flavour of the gameplay. Sure, the fountain of youth event was overpowered, but it added flavour to the game.

They don't have wagon tech. ;)

Nevertheless, they come visit all the time. You can see them wandering about your territory.

I think Elder Statesmen shoudn´t be sold or recruit in Europe. They should be like a great prophet in the form of a colonist, coming as you reach certains amount of bells.
Him and the Printing Press would "turbo up" the production of bells, in a way that you don´t have to hold the hand in producing them, since the mass production of bells will come in later years.
And by that iqual with the others foreign powers in the search of the FF.

Something like that
Sorry for the bad english

Let me guess, Dale, you majored in public relations?

"Learn the game"... well, hell, I figured that 10+ years of experience with the first one gave me some insights on how to play it. Silly me, I didn't know I had to master the code arcana of misplaced logarithmic functions in order to compete with our resident guru.

I'm leaps and bounds better than the average turn-based game player, and if I'm having problems, this product is going to shrivel and die in the marketplace. As it is, again, whether or not you think I'm 'leet enough for dudez', I would STILL cite this game as unbalanced and broken and unfun for most strategy fans, due to the end-game.

It's still an F.. and all you're doing with your attitude is making me wish I could take the game back rather than see if a patch will address these issues.

You're only leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else in the Uppity, Arrogant, And Refuses To Listen category. The mere fact that you played the original Colonization does not automatically make you a Civ4Col expert. It sounds to me like you just don't like learning a new system. Good luck learning when you refuse to do so.

I already gave them tools, horses and guns, so I will also happily provide them the secrets of the wheel if they want it.

Yeah thats true, they are probably curious about that blonde woman working in the sugar fields. :D

Careful w/Europa Universalis; you'll be wishing right quick that more Civ mods have aspects of this game. I wish I knew more about modding or I'd do it myself. EU is a great game!

No, but you got me curious now

Edit : Do you mean that Candice Bergen stood model for the sugar cane babe in CIV COL ???? :crazyeye:

No, it just an excellent film (apparently very controversial in its day) that I caught on late night TV a few yrs back, with a gorgeous Blonde, "Cowboys" and Indians....watch it if you get the chance.

Enough off topic from me, sorry ;)

It's two expansions really make the game a classic. I got instantly addicted to it and i'm still playing it occassionally. Can't say that about civ4col......

After following this thread while playing my first game I had given it up as lost because I had concentrated on Liberty Bells from the start (as I would have in Col 1). I just kept playing for the experience, and because it is a damn good game anyway. I finally decided to declare on turn 261 just to see the REF's 471 units arrive. Guess what, they are wimps. I won easily and even finished up with more dragoons than I started with. So where is the problem?

Hmm. Personally I see here even 2 problems:

1. It's not normal when King Army is few times more than your entire population.
2. It's not normal that you can easily win againist such outnumbered force, espetially professional regular army.

It could very well happen in the original Colonization.

Explorer difficulty, and besides the REF comes in waves, landing only a small fraction of the whole force each time. With good, focused contingents of rebel troops, you can defeat each wave soon after they land.

It depends on the number of ships the REF has, and how much he sends per turn. I just had some very very strange REF construction, and it's obvious that it's insanely random for artillery and ships. If the REF keeps his ships below 10, then you can pretty handily keep down his forces with a good dragoon 'wipe up' crew. But if he's sending more than that at once - you're hosed.

Trouble is, the number of ships the REF makes seems .. bizzare. I haven't figured out the rhyme or reason to the artillery and ship construction in the code. (In my last game, he had more ships than regulars!)
