heya all. many props go out to this site. i learned on it that i can click on my unhappy citizen's heads in the city screen so they can tell me what their problems are. so i did so and one of the miserable bastards said they are 100% pissed because it is so crowded. can anyone suggest what i can do about crowding? thanks in advance.

My first suggestion would be to build additional public housing. If that's not possible, then try building places of worship or entertainment, increasing the luxury tax, or the employment of entertainers.

heya. thanks for the reply. how do you build public housing(i've never heard of being able to)? i know that i could increase any of the luxury factors to silence their griping but would rather Give My People What They Need!!! the city is a size 12 so i wonder if i should build a hospital there as that would only make it more crowded.

Hospital is good -- gives 'em space to breathe. However, I build more workers (reduces city by 1) and Settlers (by 2) to export people from crowded areas to the colonies. Hmm, pretty historically accurate, what?

For unhappy citizens, "way too crowded" is general unhappiness as opposed to being unhappy about a war, or nationalized citizens unhappy about fighting against their "mother country", etc. If they're not unhappy about something specific, then it's overcrowding they dwell on. They can't articulate their feelings that well. They just have a general feeling of malaise. There's no one specific thing to do about "way too crowded", as far as I know; any of the happiness-producing things should help.

Just a few more thoughts:

1. You can channel more funds into happiness with the slider on the domestic Adviser screen, even 10% provides a 'Brave New World' (excuse allusions to Aldus Huxley).

2. Change your system of government if you've been at war for too long. I usually stick to Monarchy, as monarchists are more forgiving of my war-mongering. Communism is handy, too. If you're fighting a long war under Democracy or Republic, your citizens will get steamed up and your cities will start to smoke. If you're a religious civ, it's easy to swop around; if not pick the government that suits you and stick to it.

3. Having a Wonder such as Sistine Chapel will make your Cathedrals more happiness-producing. There are several others, and you will learn which are your personal favourites.

i appreciate all the feedback. i knew about all the happiness stuff, not to say that i can balance it all out, but wondered if the citizen was telling me something i didn't know. take care and happy gaming.

One of my favorite solutions is to build a settler from an overcrowded city. It helps to relieve overcrowded for a while and is especially useful in the case of cities that only seem to be good at producing people.

Happiness is one of the major points in winning CivIII. Another point to remember is to watch your food intake. If your city has a bunch of extra food per turn then it will grow faster than you can build improvements to reduce the unhappiness. The more citizens you have the more unhappiness. Also the harder the level the more unhappiness to contend with. Remember luxury resources will reduce unhappiness in all connected cities. If you aren't connect to enough or any, go ahead and trade for other civs extras.
