Our Democracy is doing well. I've been able to rush-buy a fair amount of items, and can probably look to bribing entire cities relatively soon.

Here's the breakout for the Science, Taxes and Luxuries:

With 0% luxuries, only Athenae has an issue with unhappiness. A single entertainer has quelled the unrest, but given that's the only city seeing this, I'd like to keep luxuries at 0%.

Here are the breakouts, then, of Science/Luxury.

80/20 = Techs in 3 turns and 82 gold
70/30 = Techs in 4 turns and 127 gold
60/40 = Techs in 4 turns and 179 gold
50/50 = Techs in 5 turns and 233 gold

Again, I'm torn. 82 gold is a nice profit and 3 turns per tech is great. However, we are behind on the industrial revolution, and 179 gold per turn can help us rush caravans for Suffrage, the UN and later Hoover. We can also hurry the production of a few factories as well.

I'm leaning, still, to the 60/40 until we can break away from the pack. Once we have Newton's and then Suffrage, I'd say go for the 80/20 split. When we can finally field a good amount of trade caravans, we'll dust everyone anyway.

What say the rest of you?

Right now the game is at 80/20.

I would prefer to kick it down the the 60/40 level. We are slightly behind them in one track of the tech chart, but a couple ahead of them elsewhere.

I would like to see the money go towards more diplomats and more caravans. Steal every tech we can get. I don't want to miss out on WS if we can help it. Once WS is built (hopefully by us) then look at cranking up our science rate again to leave them in our dust.

It's only 80/20 because I saved it after checking out all of the options. I was playing at 60/40 even after Adam Smith's. Helped us to rush-build a TON of stuff.

I'm with Duke: the 60/40 route seems best.

60/40 is fine for the time being. In fact, we should probably leave it thereabouts once we have Newton's as this will make the techs come even faster. Unfortunately we cannot make THDP the optimum trading city as none that I could see on Spice's chart demand salt. Salt is a rubbish commodity in the game anyway, but it's a shame we can't sell it within the Empire. We may like to see which other trade routes can be made though. Oops - that's my job! ;)
I would like quicker science but all the cash will prove more useful in the short term at least as we should try to have as many wonders as possible. With Newton's active then we can shoot through the rest of the tech tree easily and concentrate on exterminating the other civs with our colony cities while the heartland build SS parts. I know that I've been saying we ought to rely on THDP to research but maybe we should look to building libraries in future as we'll get the upkeep free with Smith's and they'll give us extra techs quicker. :D Not as a priority, only when we have nothing to do otherwise.

Although the salt caravan stuff is indeed rubbish, the demand/non-demand of an item will afftect the one-time payoff. I don't think that it will affect the trade arrows that are generated.

In essence, we can deliver salt to a city that does NOT demand the item. It'll be a smaller payoff, but the trade arrows will be what counts.

Further, a new commodity will eventually pop up, and hopefully it will be a more useful one.

Exactly. :)

I agree with 60/40. :)
