Hi I'm playing a game on a large map, warlord 7 civ, barb raging hordes. I've read a nice article about quick expanding and was trying it out, with succes. I have conquered everybody except one city. I've build a spaceship but I wait to launch it because I am still developping my cities so they get maximum growth. This takes a lot of time, transforming all those hills, plains etc in gras-farmland. I'm in the year 1857 now. After a session I often retire after I have saved just to see my score and compare it with the first of HOF. I had over 300% , more than 6000p a population of 250 million(and rising) and was 'the magnificent'. Now something strange happened: suddenly my population is '10.000', I'm 'the worthless' and my percentage is -267% my score is +/- 7700 though. why does this happen? What to do about it? How do I get to know my real score?

I don't know, the box of my version does not tell me that, so I think the one without any kind of patch.

I've downloaded the patch and unzipped it. When I clic civ2.exe then it says: cannot find SMEDSNET.DLL and nothing happens. Is there a readme file so I know what to do with the files? Should I put it in the existing civ2 files?

From the readme.
Q: How do I install the patch for Civilization II?

A: If the file name ends in .ZIP, then you will need the shareware
utility called Pkunzip or Winzip. This can be found easily on
most online services (or at www.pkware.com). You then use
Pkunzip or Winzip to extract the files from the archive. The
extracted files should then be copied to the CIV2 directory on
your hard drive. When you are asked if you want to replace
existing, say "yes to all."

If the file ends in .EXE (CIV242.EXE), copy the file to the
CIV2 directory and run it. It will automatically extract and
ask you if you wish to replace existing. Again say "yes
to all.

ok thanx!

installed it and the score now gives 464% in 1866, the population is also not 10.000 anymore but 141.000.000, whereas in 1794 it was over 300.000.000.

Even when patched Civ2 still has problems with big numbers, especially with displaying them... 320 million is the highest population Civ2 shows. Go any higher and it will still show up as 320 million. Then after ~655 million it starts over again at 0 (and that pattern keeps repeating itself if you go even higher).

Your real population is probably about 796 million now (=141+655).

But your entire population still counts towards your score!

strangely enough my future technology advances got a boost in 1940 like 10 in one turn. Now 1944 and after advance 250 I guess it starts all over again: FT 1 and if I look to the score it says +5 instead of +1255. Is this normal?

Yes this is. The max mumber of future techs you can discover is 255. After discovering this tech..the next future tech will be FT1 and you have less points....The developers thought that nobody ever would discover more techs then FT255....so they stopped making more techs after FT255. I don't know how it exactly works, but at some point you indeed get a boost of techs in one turn....in one game I had around 40 in one turn....

yes, it is 2013 and the spaceship is launced and I have just finished up a second cycle so I'm back at FT1 :) So I guess I can add 2550p to my score

The reason for the large number to techs in one turn is that about FT 167, the cost per tech rolls over to 10 beakers, just like your first tech. I don't remember the exact progression, but each tech costs more than the previous one. This can be as much as 32,000=/- beakers before it rolls over to 10 again. So on the turn it rolls over, since your generating several thousands of beakers per turn, presto, your starting over at only 10 per. (IIRC, the last time I did this, I got about 47 advances in one turn!)

The real trick, is creeping up on #255 without going over. As you found out, going over 255 FT costs about 1270 points.

And here I had thought it had something to do with going from 2000 AD to 2001 AD, live and learn. The most I've gotten in a single turn was 61 (FT 165 to FT 226). I had been getting 2-3 per turn and that sudden jump caught me by surprise.
