Turns out that I'm suffering from mysterious mid-game Civ3 lockups just like everyone else here.

Whenever I get to the oh-so-distant year 610, if I try to move a swordsman more than 9 spaces at once, the game freezes up and that's all she wrote....

The only way to get out of it is to Ctl-Alt-Del Windows XP and kill Civ3, which is listed as "Not Responding".

You clowns at Infograms really screwed everyone with your lame ass, untested, crappily written, piece of crap 1.21f patch.

I for one won't be troubleshooting your lousy patch for you anymore. (It's YOUR job to fix it, not your customer's).

I've found that if I switch to task manager and threaten it with shutting down, it mysteriously starts working again. But that may simply be that it's finished trying to cycle through animations that won't play by the time that task manager loads up.

:goodjob:

Everyone else? I'm running XP and I haven't suffered a single lockup or crash with either of the last two patches.

What do you mean by 'moving a swordsman more than 9 squares' anyway? Are you talking about via railroad or have you edited the units?

Yeah?, well I STILL can't play the damn game after numerous installs, patches, fixes, etc...

I'm on win98se. I don't understand it... when I originally installed the game, I was fine. About a week or so later, the crashes started coming. Now I see only the splash screen and that's all folks.

Exile_Ian... You can move a player multiple spaces automatically by left clicking your mouse on the icon you want to move, then dragging to the location where you want it to ultimately end up. (You see a red line between the icon in question and your cursor). Then once you get to the space where you want it to be just release the mouse button and the piece will move on it's own during subsequent turns without you having to manually move it every turn.

With regard to your luck with getting the game to run, good for you. But take a look at this MONSTEROUS THREAD. MOST folks don't appear to be sharing your experience.

I gave up and just unloaded all the Info-Crap Patches. Now mine works just fine and I can run it for DAYS with no lockups.

This is my last time with Info-Crap , I definitely won't be buying Civ4 or anything else from them until they get their act together. It's TOTALLY unacceptable to release poorly tested code on paying customers and letting them do all your beta testing for you.

That's the kinda crap Bill Gates does everytime he releases a new flavor of Windows...

I’ve had my copy of CIV III since January and I have yet to make it through the end of a game without restarting. It seems like once you get to the middle ages, crap starts happening with this game. Two of the major errors I always seem to get are Civ.exe caused an error… and error in sound.dll. Despite all the patches it still happens. The only time I did make it through the game is when I played without any other AI opponents. Maybe it’s the AI that is screwing the game up. I just wish firaxis would address these major issues people are having with this game instead of releasing patches for minor facelifts.

"INFO-CRAP " I love it . I started thinking of it as CIV (Crash !) 3 .
Exactly right on in your assessment of Mr Gates usual methods .
I uninstalled , defragged , tweaked and re-installed to get it
to work after the 1.21 ambush . Good thing the Mod-writers are
more competent than the folks at info-crap .

Remember that any SW run on an unstable OS, with the inherent limitations and flaws, will likely be unstable.

I have an HP Pavilion 1.6

After installing the 1.21f patch I have on occasion crashed when I want to look at my unit screen F3. This does not occur if I go to F1 and click on my advisor. This never happened on the previous patch.
