I dont think that this has been posted about, ive read many posts to find it but i havent, so if I offend anyone sorry.

Ive been playing civ for a while and one thing that makes me mad is in real life most wars do not end in territory gain rather that countrys political system or structure will be replaced with the occupying countrys. Or the ability to Start a seperate political idenity still under your rule under a new name. With this option people could wage war without consiquence to thier whole country.

In SMACX, it was possible to release Mind Worms into the wild-this meant you built the mind worms and then hit the "release into wild" button, and your mind worms unit turned into barbarian (alien) mind worms. The player would first move their mind worms into a rivals' territory, "release" them and then let the mind worms wreak havoc without incurring any kind of diplomatic penalty.
In Civ4 you could have a "mercenary" type unit or units (for different eras), which also have the special ability to be "released", ie be turned into barbarian units, once built. This would also expand on the commendable Privateer innovation of Civ3.
A modern historical example of this would be, say, the Contras getting "secret" support from the US government, or the Afgani "freedom fighters" also supported by the USA in a proxy war with the USSR in Afganistan. These "wild" mercenaries, like the Afgani "freedom fighters" could also possibly attack their original "host" nation, just to make things more interesting ie introduce blowback into Civ4.

Sir, Some of those groups inspired this post, If people really knew that secret societies rule the world, they have the ability to be more powerful than a country, you said stonecutters thats what the simpsons called thier secret society, the stonecutters represent the Free Masons Probably the most powerful secret society in the world, they were formally know as the Knight Templars wich are in the game but have a small effect in the begining of the Middle Ages. Putting Secret Societies in the game would be a great idea but the effects and what secret society would have to be debated a little more.

Actually here would be a fun game mode for civ. You take a save-game, but become one of the secret societies. These socities fight to control the 'underbelly' of cities. The outside civs still control the game as normal, but you almost fight at another level, but still interact in the overall world. You build society units, search out other secret societies, and take actions against and with world leaders.

You could also add that having a SS would open more spy missions or corperate sabatoge, If Civ 4 has a world market system then the SS option could have many more options.

I thought that agents of most of the SS were not the recognized leaders, but the people who actually ran the scenes. Dubya would not be part of the Trilateral Commission, but was chosen by them. Since you are the spirit of the civ and not the direct leader you could try to influence your particular SSs.

SSs would allow for some strange happenings, however to truly simulate them the focus would change from civ vs. civ to SS vs. SS. Interesting as a mode of civ rather than the standard.

I liked where the first post was going but all the rest of these ideas are a bit strange.
