Select / deselect group?

I'm running 3.19 BTS. Everything works fine, but sometimes the system won't let me select or deselect single units in a group. Instead the whole group will be activated. I can only fix this by grouping and ungrouping the units with the icons in the toolbar, then pick the activated single unit and move it to a different tile.
It doesn't really break the game, but it can be annoying when I want to split a stack or leave important units behind. Did someone experience similar difficulties? Is there a solution?

I personally have had this happen a lot, especially when I try to take a few units from one group and add it to another group. I usually have to select everybody with the alt key then remake the groups from scratch, which is tedious sometimes. I'd love to see if there was some simpler way to fix this!
