SGOTM 17 - Fifth Element

As I've said before, more and earlier war and less Wonders. As a team we were better this game about being Wonder hogs but we should have warred earlier against all the AI.
On the plus side, I think we have the possibility of a good showing. This game was designed to draw things out. Sure other teams ramped up power earlier by a few turns but if it was due to an overwhelming number of knights or rifles them we could still be okay .

turn 1
drop first paras,
moved to Osaka
turn 2
Captured Canterbury, 3-1 losses.
Captured Osaka 23-15 losses, heavy losses but I'm still optimistic. Only have 10 cavalry instead of 15 planed.
Killed 3 Japanese units on the open.
turn 3
got industrialism
droped 12 paras outside york. Lost two paratroopers in the open against English units.
droped 7 units outside of warwick
droped 9 units into Canterbury.
English counter attack looses 10-1
turn 4
got biology
Captured York looses 5-3
Drop medic 3 paratrooper + 3 normal to Warwick where my army is really hurt.
drop 13 paras outside of Nottingham
Reinforce Canterbury with 7 paras.
Capture Satsuma looses 5-6
Killed 3 English units in the open.
Killed two Japanese units in the open.
turn 5
capture Nottingham, looses 10-3
droped 4 paras outside Coventry.
counterattack from england looses 1-0
turn 6
Kagoshima captured, looses 11-1
Izumo captured, looses 3-3
Japan destroyed
Warwick survives with one unit at 0.3 health. looses 7-8
Hastings captured, looses 5-0
Coventry captured, looses 4-1
English counter attack, looses 2-0, I'm erally happy about this one. It is what may enable me to capture London one turn earlier.
turn 7
Warwick captured, looses 2-0
London captured, looses 4-1
English destroyed

Uploaded the save

The save before victory and the log.

I decided to put the log in a file since it would need 10 posts because it is so long.

Well played everyone.

I think my last turn set was pretty successful. Did not loose a single turn on my way to Kyoto and after Kyoto was captured all of England in seven turns.

Has been a pleasure to play with you. Now we will have to wait an other month before we get to do it again.

Great job all!

I have looked at some of our opponents and several of them are in pretty bad spots. Bad economy and far away from paratroopers. I think our chances are not so bad to avoid the wooden spoon.

Yeah, great job anyone.
This is really a team, i hope to have at least our core for next one.
If we gain another wooden spoon, it's OK anyway. If we do something better, great! 1856... let's see.

I also looked at other threads and it looks like the winning strategy is not Paratroopers. PD and one other went with a teleport route. They got OB with Toku, are moving a huge stack to a spot close to Church and will declare on Toku and then teleport the units into England. Then they just have to move to a spot with no english culture and DoW on Church. Ingenious idea. I wonder if the mapmaker had that approach or our approach in mind?

It's hard to say. Having that jungled land inside the ice north of churchill might be there for landing teleported units.

With our economy it wouldn't have been possible to do this teleport trick, because we didn't have a good enough tech advantage and production to have a single huge stack on the other end of the map that can wipe out all of Churchill.

EDIT: I'd be interested to hear kcd about this. I hope he drops in soon and tells us if he thought about paras or the teleport trick.

I noticed too this strategy. Probably they will settle some city on that chunk of land, whip some galley. But there's not a single tile in the England portion behind the ice.
There's that land between the ice and a 1-tile sea, but i can't see how they can think to be teleported there for sure. Probably declare on Toku, see that happens, declare on Chur. but they must have settlers+workers already there. Then, how can they have OB with that jerk?

I think they either get open border with Toku by a common war or by bribing him to pleased. A common war is not that difficult. We could have bribed china to attack him.

Or even more simple way: city gifting. I actually thought about this, but didn' see how it would be worth it for us.

Good job, guys. I'd have been more active if I wasn't gone for 2 weeks.

Well, it seems like all teams have now decided to teleport units into England. I guess we can start to celebrate our wooden spoon now.

At this point i just say this: i hope it doesn't work.
Or that Chur makes a so fierce resistance to destroy their stack. They can't produce much in that land and they will need a lot of workers to make it productive. Once the teleported stack is gone, they will need paras. And Chur is not an easy prey.

I'd like to know if the mapmaker made that chunk of land on purpose. If so, was it there to give an advantage to this teleport trick or to entrap who tries it?

In any case, i just disagree. This will be the third attempt to create a different game and have it to finish in the usual way. Lincoln and Ghandi are the precedents.

I'd like to hear something by kcd. BTW no one of the Staff deigned to post anything after we finished.

Well, news.
I fell on this screenie in PD's thread.
Just compare that area with the same in our game and you can see that it's completely different. I already PMed Alan, because i think there's something wrong in the starting saves.

edit: cancel. it was a test game

Great game!:goodjob: You guys did what I had thought most teams would need to do to win this one, and did it better than I could have imagined. Of course, you can take that either as praise or shame, but I definitely intend it as praise. I am impressed with your results!

Great game pace, and from your threads it sounded like you mostly had some fun. So my time wasn't wasted on you. That's nice... I was too nice overall :vomit:

So you have finally deemed us worthy of your presence. Thanks for hosting the game.

I have enjoyed the game but my personal opinion is that I rather fight a variant then fighting the map.
