SGOTM 17 - Maple Sporks

seems nice, can't wait to the report
the plans seems to be in actions :)
I really like to see this mass cannon factory :)

few comments before i forget:
- phant city could build troops.
- the bank anf FP in the south can be whiped
- Ankor wat can be whiped
- Gangzhou should build rathaus or forge
- a road should be built between the forest near our fort/canal and the railway.
- 2 chinese worker can be stolen this turn with our heros knight.

Report to follow.

7 turns played, not good, not bad...GA ends next turn.

Why 'not good'? I like our power graph jump

Had a quick look at the save:
* Guangzhou is about to starve, it should whip something now (cannon?)
* Raze all other captured cities from now? Or keep if rathaus and put on wealth? Be mindful of domination later on.
* What will the timing of the Russian campaign be relative to building up for churchill? There are a zillion nice towns to pillage in Russia, which would give us nice cash for rushbuying in England! Units left over/not needed from the Russia campaign should pillage for cash left, right and centre!

(xpost with DS)

Certainly looks promising.

Biggest issue seems to be Toku not willing to OB yet. It seems that if he'd just take merc that he probably would go to pleased and take it.

In any case, I think current troop build up should be heading all towards Japan to be teleported, whether by declaring and peacing out on Japan or by OBing and closing. The latter would be preferrable, if only because it will take only a third of the turns to get into position: from Hangzhou 4 instead of 12 (actually less than 12 because we'd clean up Kagoshima on the way, freeing up some tiles, but still OB would be much quicker obviously). Still we'd need to get ALL England-troops to Hangzhou first, so we have margin for Toku to open borders. Even if we have to declare in the end, we'd still have to wait for our troops to arrive...

On civics: while with our current grand plan we'll need US to rushbuy boats, I'd advocate Police State right now. We won't be settling the galley producing cities for quite some time (especially the English one) and we'll only be building troops meanwhile. Besides, we already have 2 great people ready to launch a GA to switch to US at any moment.

Obviously we should spam cuirs too after we get MT. They seem to be pretty good too especially for Russia. Will we even bother about getting to rifles after MT? Or would it be worthwhile to get astro?

Small note: a galley costs 25h/unit capacity; a galleon costs 26,67h/unit capacity. If we're only transporting a 1tile river, galleys are better.
The hammer/unit capacity is slightly in favour of sticking to galleys, but marginally so. At least for getting troops faster from our core through the fort at FK towards Russia I think galleons do have a plus. Not a big deal, but as we have to tech something anyway, I wouldn't be unhappy to get astro.

* Raze all other captured cities from now? Or keep if rathaus and put on wealth? Be mindful of domination later on.
We should keep domination in mind, but we have a lot of margin there still. We're just half way with our 31.89% land of 64% required!

Still, in case of Russia and England I'd probably raze nearly everything apart from 1 or 2 forward/healing bases.

In case of Japan, a lot depends on if we go through Japan fighting or not. If we do, I'd probably keep Kagoshima as a forward base. However, once eliminating Japan itself nearly everything can be just erased.

In case of Hangzhou, I'm tempted to keep it. One interesting option could be to gift it to Toku for extra diplo to get our OB. ;)

I'm not completely into the attack plan and sequencing of events. We have to be careful that settling the canal cities near Peter don't screw up our tested teleporting.

I've found the formula for the tile you are teleported to is:
Min(2*JumpDistance + CityDistance).

That means the distance to our nearest city influences the jump!

Report (save in #1001).

1615. As advertised. Nationalism, Merc. Ceasefire Qin, Mansa. Give Toku guilds. Part bulb education. Hinmon Elephant City. FP down south. Draft.

1620. Education>Lib (4t).

1625. Gift Toku banking ().

1635. GM in copper city.

1640. Lib (Steel) > Miltrad (4t). Upgrade trebs to cannon, build cannon. Silk to Toku for 5gpt. Open Borders with Russia.

1645. Dow Mansa.

1650. Timbuktu revolts. Capture Gao for loss of 1 knight (friendly RNG). End of Mali. Dow Qin.

Drafting throughout. Our southern cities are getting pretty unhappy. FP finishes next turn. We've got 15 cannon and 28 muskets (inc some garrison).

Got settler and knights heading slowly towards Russia with a couple of workers. Couple of workers with musket escort starting on a road.

We've also got a settler languishing in Silver Fort. Couple of Hindu missionaries own south looking to convert cities into theocratic unit pumps.

GA ends next turn. Time to decide on civix.

Polynesia must die!

Its blocking trade route from (soon to be founded) Wheatcity to rest of empire. Wheat is worth 2 health (=2 food) to every city in the empire.

Still no OB with Toku. However we have OB with Russia and wheat city will be settled (and likely connected) in the next set to start on galleys. Maybe time to revisit the Russian Teleporter:

Happy either way (depends on DS).

Regarding civics, I think we should swop to US now, save PS for serious last battles when we'll be needing reinforcements and facing serious WW from warring on 2-3 fronts. We could stay in Nationalism but I'd go easy on the drafting. If we're going for US we could think about caste instead of slavery for better workshops.

I don't think we'll need many more gunpowder units, cannon will do the heavy fighting with muskets to mop up. Cuirassiers for easier targets and stack bashing.

Can we port from Russia to north island and how might city placement affect this?

edit: I've been playing with astre's test map (#973) and WB, settling a city anywhere facing Russia drags units east rather than south. Bit of a nuisance.

second edition: However if we gift wheat city to Russia before closing borders the units in Russia get ported south to north island, units in wheat city get ported just outside the borders ready to retake it.

I'll play a few more turns.

Gifting wheat city and closing borders with Russia certainly works in the test save. We'll have to see if Peter will accept wheat city in the Real Game (TM) before deciding on best route to north island.

I think I'll have a go at capturing Polynesia in the real game, probably keep it. Keep China's last city.

Civics wise. PS for unit boost or US for rush buying? Maybe PS after all particularly if we spread Hinduism and go for conventional building rather than whipping or drafting. Likewise caste for better workshops rather than uncool slavery.

Fom my test it doesn't matter where wheat city is placed so I'll put it south of wheat to reduce road travel.

I do prefer PS right now but would keep uncool slavery. Unit whipping is cheaper too with PS. Under PS in the coming 10-15 turns we should be able to get all units we'll need to knock out the remaining AIs.

Teleportingwise I think it looks more logical and certain to do so from Japan, than from Russia gifting wheat...

Will you keep Hangzhou for a possible gift to Toku?

Maybe we can use some more galleys for shipping over units from our core.

Problem with teleporting from Japan is getting the units in place, I'll certainly keep an eye open for OB with Japan otherwise we're looking at a fairly long slog to get units in place for teleport.

In the meantime I'll get wheat city established and then we can revisit options.

I'll keep Hangzhou. I'm not sure that gifting a city gets diplo bonus unless it counts as liberation.

I actually think that growing cities and working more workshops will give us more hammers than constant whipping in the medium term because of diminishing happy cap.

Played four more turns up to 1670.

Had a revolution:

Researched miltrad then 100% wealth.

Grew cities, spread Hinduism to 3 cities and built Hinmon down south to spread it further.

Killed China (lost cannon and LK).

Toku's adopted mercantilism.

He'll accept Huangzhou if we decide to give it away.

We've elected ourselves AP resident (sole candidate) but the world still considers us a villain.

We're almost ready to stomp Polynesia:

We need to decide where to put wheat city:

We've got 30 muskets and 25 cannon.

That's about it

Save in #1019.

Maybe you can just attach it if the problem persists?

Good work on the power build up.

For the record: Sengir up, DS on deck.

habgzhou would be liberated. it is said on colony panel (i don't know how i open it each time i open it by mistake).
we should take this option

for the rest, build cuirs, galleys and go go go :)
