SGOTM 22 - Fifth Element

Settled 3rd city on T78 this time, so a small improvement.

I'd be willing to change tech path to Myst -> Poly -> Phood -> Writing -> Monarchy

Monarchy isn't that critical until after the 3rd city. Writing is really all about the Library, which gets 2-pop whipped after being unhappy at Pop 6. Also, if we do find some borders, I think we should switch to it immediately. It's a 20% boost in research when you get those trade routes.

I'm still undecided about when to fit it in, but it's really annoying not having Agriculture. It can technically wait till after Monarchy, but that means we can't farm the Corn until well after it's available.

All right, I think NZ is right about how we need to operate over this turnset and maybe beyond. So, I'll lay out the overall goals, but only a plan for about 3 turns.

Turnset Goals

Builds
1. Settler by T73
2. 3 Archers to guard borders by T61
3. Total of 8-9 archers by T78
4. Granary in Rome
5. Monument in Porcellus

Worker Actions
1. Roads to all border guards
2. Road to site of 3rd city
3. Couple of cottages

Techs
1. Pottery T56
2. Myst T60
3. Polytheism T68
4. Priesthood
5. Writing

PPP
T56-T58

T56

Rome
Tiles - Fish, Mine
Build - switch to Archer

Porcy
Tiles - Pig
Build - whip Archer

Units
Archer 2 attack barb, Archer 1 promote and attack if Archer 2 dies
Worker 2 - Road 1N1W of Rome
Worker, Worker 1 - Cottage 1E of Rome
Water - back to Rome
Galley - keeps exploring, obviously

Techs
Finish Pottery

T57

Rome
Tiles - Fish, Mine
Build - Archer 5/25

Porcy
Tiles - Pig
Build - start another Archer

Units
Archer 2 promote and move 1S to forest hill (hopefully)
Archer 1 move to 1N1W of Porcy
Archer 3 move 1S1E of Porcy
Worker 2 - Road 2N1W of Rome
Worker, Worker 1 - Cottage 1E of Rome
Warrior 2 - move to GFH 2N1W

Techs
Start Myst

T58

Rome
Tiles - Fish, Mine
Build - Archer 9/25

Porcy
Tiles - Pig
Build - finish Archer 4, start Archer

Units
Archer 2 fortify
Archer 1 move to 2N of Porcy
Archer 3 move 2S2E of Porcy
Worker 2 - Road 2N1W of Rome
Worker, Worker 1 - Road 2E of Rome
Warrior 2 - Fortify

By the time Archer 4 is finished, it shouldn't matter too much whether Archer 2 died or not.

So what would you change or add in either the goals or the short term plan?

I wouldnt go for monument in Porcy. Granary instead.

BTW sorry for being out for the moment, will probably be out for 2 more days and later for the weekend.

And lets go

OK, so far so good!

Saved Game on T59: Link

All 4 archers are alive. One of them even has Guerilla II for double hill movement.

I ended up going with Writing because I found Saladin on T57. I thought that would be the end of exploration until we could open borders, but not so! I made a very interesting discovery: All the water tiles (that we can see) are coast. So, the galley is sailing out around Saladin's culture and will continue north.

Realized that workers can't cottage the turn before Pottery is in, so started on roads instead.

Here's what I have planned for the next several turns:

T58-T64_zpsybxqn8dd.png

As for units, I'll send the C2 warrior to the other forested hill west of Rome so that the archer and warrior hold the western flank. The archer finishing on T61 will go to the hill 1E of Porcy and protect it while it gets mined. Galley continues its quest along the coast.

BTW is Sal worst enemy of enyone? I suppose not. Gift pig or fish in such a case

Do we want second galley before or after granary? I'd say before.

Do we want second galley before or after granary? I'd say before.
I prefer granary first because if we wait to build it, we don't actually use it until after we whip down from size 6.

Now that we have a route to Arabia, I think there's limited advantage to putting resources into exploration.

There's a few more civs to find but if you want to go granary first then that's not a huge deal.

If no-one else is contributing then you could assume there are no major concerns about you plan so you may as well carry on.

Thanks for chiming in, pigswill. I went ahead with the plan up through T64.

Game save

It wasn't all that eventful. Barb warriors are largely avoiding suicide attacks against archers on hills, which means attacking them before they can get to our improved tiles. We lost one warrior, but gained some experience for archers.

Located Persia and Ethiopia with the galley. Got OB with both of them (and Sal) now that writing is in.

Galley keeps doing what it's doing. Priorities for workers are Mine and Road 1E of Porcy, then roads to the archer north of Porcy and toward the 3rd city site, a chop into the Settler around T70, and a cottage near Porcy.

How do you guys feel about having only 7 archers at the time of founding the 3rd city? It's pretty much the bare minimum we can get away with. I'd really prefer 8, but that means sacrificing either the 2nd galley or the monument...
