SGOTM8 - Cutlery

I suspect it might slow down after the initial excitement of our very own thread wears off..... You know how people are, they need bigger & better things to get a rush. Maybe next we could get our own forum.....

Just thought I'd post this; in bold are the ones that are not fundamentally a waste of shields (IMHO) and we could want to have, eventually:

Industrious Wonders:
Pyramids, HG, TGW, Hoover, Manhattan

Expansionnist Wonders:
Colossus, GLH, Copernicus, Magellan's, SETI

Both (Auto-GA) Wonders:
The Internet

Getting Colossus sounds smart, but beware of pyramids. A GA from Col (or Coper)+Hoover would be awesome, just when we can start to do something and need to push up.
Thanks for posting that. I think that the Pyramids are out due to the fact that I really think that we will be on island (archepeligo map) all by ourselves. But would Gyathaar really give us another lone island start right after SGOTM7's???

Why not ! This is Emperor, after all :p
On a side note, is the plain tile SE a river one? I can see the river crocheting sea-wards, but I'm in no way sure it's considered a river town. I'll have to guess not and hope for another good shields town for Hoover.

edit: and that's 22 vs 11, twice as many as everyone. Hope alon has got some spare time coming.

I don't think that it is rivered but it has the obvious lake. So no Hoovers in WoodenSpoonton :( but no aqueduct either :).

From what I see, we have 3 rivers nearby, so we are most likely on a big island. I hope this scratches off the tiny lone island dreadful possibility - maybe it's a medium size dreadfully lone island ;)

Getting the Pyramids is usually tough, and they're not quite as exciting on an arch map. The Colossus might be doable, if there's a good coastal spot nearby (we probably won't want to try it in our capital).

IMO, the Hanging Gardens may not be a waste of shields, depending on how many luxuries we have on our starting landmass (which could be as few as one, if we're alone), especially since we might have a harder time than usual getting trade routes established.

I thought we just needed a river within the city radius. Or am I remembering wrong?

I think that we should follow this advice from this 1865 editorial from the New York Tribune. any scouting should pobably be that way for now until the limits of the island are discovered.

According to CivAssistII the city has to be on a river.

CAII is wrong ;) We just need a river in the radius. I'll be settling SE unless there are serious objections - in the end, we're going to want shields and both the desert and plains would give 2 shields for over half the game.

I'm inclined towards Copernicus+Hoover - I doubt we'll have the time to spare for either of the early ones.

Good point on HG, and on Bach's for that matter. I guess we'll have to see what the scouting gives us.

First move: Scout W,W, as suggested by our fearless leader :D

Unless there's something magnificent that way, Settler SE and Worker E. First build will be a second Scout (5 turns), by which time we should have a better idea of what to do next? Warrior for MP then Settler, probably.

There is a discussion in the Maintenance thread about getting cities for peace & exploits associated with abandoning the capital. I'd suggest everyone at least subscribe to that thread in order keep abreast of issues with the game.

I just noticed that the barbs are raging. In SGOTM7 the barbs were only roaming.

Wacken expanded like crazy and didn't have to deal with the barbs too much while other teams took a more conservative approach and had to deal with the barbs until the Always-War AI hordes showed up. I'm not sure which way to go in this game but I think that we need to expand pretty quickly and stop the barbs from bothering us.

NOT THE DREADED BARBS again
i still remember the last 15 times the violated my $%#Se.
lesson one from the spoon awards - we need to expand even faster than you can whisper to a horse.
raging barbs are a real pain. ESCORT EVERYTHING. expand like the Abola. maybe we can out pace them buggers.

It probably depends on how many civs share our landmass. If we're alone, the barbs will probably be a big pain, but the AI is usually pretty good about keeping the barb population down (I guess that's the one advantage of the AI always knowing the map :) ).

Anyway, I'd recommend expanding as quickly as reasonably possible. I don't see any benefit to being particularly conservative, though escorting the settlers is always a good idea.

We need to settle another town that can pump settlers and one that can supply us with warriors ASAP. My experience with raging barbs is that settling that warrior pump town is even more crucial than the second settler pump, but given the looks of the terrain ATM, I'm sure we can find room for both in the first 40 turns.

Hi, just checking into the thread and bookmarking.

The team name is a scream.

Opening moves are not my forte unless painfully obvious. I'll read the thread and post a similarly meaningless note later this evening. Glad to help.

Atta boy. Pad that post count. Once the Xteam starts talking, I doubt that we'll be able to keep up with them.

@jb: :rotfl:
Thanks for the cheers Mistfit
