SGOTM8 - Wacken

I now look at Byzantium - Tacoma. I see i made the mistake to base the choppers in the city while i should have based them on the airstrip. Too bad Rome flipped and you couldn't use that imeadiately.

This delay keeps ocupied the foot units a bit longer, so i think you should make some extra ones for the Viking islands.

For city flips, i'd just disband any city that you no longer need. Only keep some with rax where you heal your units. If the railway is completely intact and you can reach it, you can even go heal in Veii.

Did you take Edo with the damaged tanks from Olympia ?
(who were there for healing b4 transport to Rome :))

I think Rome shouldn't be too bad without ROP. most cities are close enough together. If you feel like taking a little risk, you could attack Lutetia with the 6 tanks on turn 1. Bring in the 7 newly produced tanks and hopefully 5 others from Japan/Rome place and take Jerusalem and Caesaraugusta on turn2, both are within reach. Brusdisium will then be withit reach (also has defenders from Nicomedia). Cyracuse turn3 and Palmyra turn4 :)
And then hope that in 4 turns you have also been able to take the Viking islands and Caesarea :)

Oh, and for our lurkers :)

Yep, they were healed and I moved them in before the rape.

Actually, I've checked how far I can move the tanks in Rome and I can only move them next to Lutetia.

Also, My wife has reminded me that we have a job after work tonight (I deal cards at parties part time on occasion) and that my weekend is booked. I really hate to do this but I'm going to upload the save as is and turn it over to the next player. It's still 1160AD, turn 1 and there is still a lot of work to be done.

NOTE ABOUT ROMAN ISLAND TANKS: For some reason not all the tanks there can use their full movement, so don't move the whole stack if you move them this turn, but rather move them one at a time.

I've moved a number of cav to the Jap island since they can reach the one city next turn. The other city will be 2 turns away. Should probably investigate both to see just how many troops will be need to insure victory. Don't want to take too many since there is only one airstrip to get them out again.

The Save. (This text is to get this message over the mandatory 10 character limit. "The Save." was only 9 characters, thus necessitating this long, drawn out, overly wordy couple of sentences to make sure I don't get that annoying error message again. I could have just edited the previous post, but that would have meant not adding another post to our count. And since we're almost to the end of the game, we can't have that. Can we? Running out of things to say. I guess I'll shut up now.)

@Xevious: Good Job! :goodjob: and hope you have some fun this weekend.

Who's up next?! I reckon it is Wotan who will have to finish the game.

I think Wotan will be more than happy to play, but he was mentioning busy days at work, so why don't you PM him to make sure he gets to this game rather sooner than later. :)

I wanted to suggest we raze all the cities we capture so other teams don't see our real progress, but after the last turn it will be hard to do. The curve is way up already.

I think if he gets to this site he is not gonna read his PM's while not visiting this thread :)

Yeah, the teritorry graph looks fun now :)
The culture graph should tell our opponents more than enough as well though.

.

He might or may not login here but when you PM it actually sends e-mail message to the person's e-mail address.

EDIT: He he... i am inpatient, ain't I?

Oh, does it email ?

Not for me luckily, i get spam enough already :D

Here, i'll start making a little write up about what we did in our game already :)

While i was at the Wacken Open Air festival during the first turnsets of this game, my teammates started out with an outstanding opening. In the maintenance thread it seemed some of you guys had already noticed that :)

Scientifically our opening was a little less outstanding. We decided to go for the republic slingshot, but we were beated to philosophy by an unknown AI. Now that would not be so bad by itself if that was the same for everyone, but the QSC results showed us that 3 other teams in fact had better luck with their slingshot.

We also decided to build the colossus in this science game. It was a pretty easy build, not contested by the AI. To my suprise, QSC showed us we were the only ones using this wonder.

Our strong start alowed us to take the the jungle central on our island pretty much uncontested. While we are fond of high numbers of workers already, we decided to make an extra lot of workers this game to clear this jungle asap. After many posts of discussions, questioning and misunderstanding, together we dug up the old formulas of Forbidden Palace corruption again and calculated that an FP in the centre of that jungle with another ring of cities around it would do very well corruption wise. After clearing the jungle, we could then join the workers to our cities. We used multiple worker factories to build these workers.

Building the Forbidden palace was a more difficult matter though. While it would be an option to go beat china and greece and hope for a leader to rush the palace, we did not want our game to depend on such a luck factor and decided to hand build it.
The city where we wanted it was very corrupt to start with. Not only did this cause a very low shield count, it also caused huge happiness problems in the city. a 60% luxury level was needed for about 20 turns to complete this FP. This was obviously a huge investment and with our missed republic slingshot to enhance the damage, we were (and still are) a slight bit nervous, unknowing if this scientific setback could ever be overcome.

meanwhile, war started out a bit slowly. At least not as fast as some in our team would have liked it to start. ;) Not much special about this war, we captured our island slowly, we got some cities on the island with spices for peace and we ICSed the northern part of the island for some extra scientists.

While we had hoped to capture some industrious wonder here for our golden age, we didn't get to be that lucky. No Great Wall, Hanging Gardens or Pyramids for us. Our golden ages thus came much, much later after we built the Hoover Dam in our golden age. I am still not sure what this meant for our game. An earlier GA would have been nice for our research, but the production from this Industrial GA in War time was very usefull for us as well.

The Vikings kept threatening us with their boats and made us fear their berserkers. Luckily, we have never seen a berserker on our island. We did however get a city on the english island from the Vikings in peace talks. That ended up to be very usefull.

Our research gradually improved. While we lost many turns to the missed republic slingshot and the investment for the FP, we got to 4 turn research by the end of the Middle ages and pretty much researched everything in 4 turns trough the Industrial age.
With some help, we were also reasonably succesfull in trading technology. Feudalism, Engineering, Invention, Gunpowder, Astronomy, Nationalism, Steam Power and Replacable Parts we got from the AI in trades. We had also hoped to get at least one of the late MA techs, but unfortunately there the AI researched the wrong tech.

During the industrial ages we had again some difficult choises to make. What techs do we want first? what units are we gonna use ?
We had to choose between flight first or Electronics with the Hoover Dam first. Eventually, still not very sure of our choise, we decided to go for Electronics first. Luckily the team talked mass bombers out of my head and convinced me that tanks are a better deal. So tanks we made. Many tanks we made, with our golden age to support production, and gold to shortrush them after we researched Advanced Flight.

The moment we researched flight, we had almost 50 cavalry. Now that city in england came to good use. We had build a worker there and turned it into an airstrip. It was a pretty close call, when we researched flight, our city was razed by angry Romans. Our worker fled the city just in time to save his live and build an airstrip. Then came the cavalry....

The cavalry conquered england while we researched on towards Advanced Flight. We had built some 25 bombers and 25 tanks by the time we researched AF. Choppers were deployed to bring settlers and workers to enemy islands. There we build cities with airstrips to bring the tanks and use ROP rape to capture the world.

Another reminder to whoever plays next, there is an empty army and an unused leader in old Japan. They can't be used until next turn, but don't forget about them.

should we load the empty army into the chopper and send it to the fortified roman island along with the troops to fill it later?

If we have chopper transport available, certainly.

If it means we are short a chopper then for other transports, using the army against Rome is probably worth using the chopper there and cashrushing another one where needed.

However, i am not sure we can transport an empty army, but otherwise maybe the leader?

so no armies, but the available leader can go over there. Just have to capture the 1st city, build an army, load it, then rock-n-roll :hammer:
