Well I'm trying to make a few extra gold during the midieval period. I was wondering if it pays off to connect to any other Civilizations. Also, is an open borders all you need to do it?

No, you won't be able to create trade routes with other civs. Only domestic trade routes.

There is one exception to build a road and that is when a City State requests a road.
You won't get any money from it, though, only some one-time influence.

You don't get any money for connecting up your roads to rivals, unfortunately.

I do it anyway, though, because then when I declare war I can get my units to their borders that much quicker. :mischief:

your roads also don't cost money when build outside your territory, so go ahead and build a road toward your enemy.

I'm pretty sure they changed this in a recent patch. I built a long road to my second city once and was being charged for every tile along the way, regardless of whether or not it was in my territory.

Can somebody clarify what happens if Civ A build a road around a city, Civ B invades Civ A, kills them, and burns down that city? Does nobody pay for it or is it the last owner?

Sid pays for it.

Actually, I'm assuming any roads that were in territory that was lost will not be paid for by anyone, because otherwise if a larger civ loses a great deal of territory to razed cities it seems like it would cripple their economy, especially if they couldn't get their workers out there to delete the roads. Now that you mention it though, I would like to know for sure.
