I have won couple of last games on regent (don't remember that I have lost),but I've heard here that next levels are not fair and that a AI will rather cooperate with non-human (just because they are not human) players so I wouldn't go there, don't like playing unfair?Couldn't they think of something else how to get game harder but like this?Couldn't the AI just play BETTER???

The AI are more likely to cooperate with each other at higher levels because they have more to offer to each other due to their level bonuses. While it's technically true that the core AI engine is the same, the modifiers do make nuance level differences.

Bottom line is this, if you're getting bored with Regent, it's time to go to Monarch.

It's not that the AI would rather coperate with each other then you, they'll easily sign an MA with you against another AI. They just get a discount when trading with each other.

Go on... the AIs get 10% discount on everything except science while you have to pay more for techs. They don`t really "cheat". They are all the bonuses they get on higher levels.

AI-AI trade rate is 130 (IIRC on monarch) which means 100 gold given by one AI is considered 130 by another AI. That`s why they easily trade anything they have.

Unfair? Yes, it`s unfair. Just play. Once, on demi my city was attacked by a warrior. I could see clearly that there was no spearman nearby. But, when I wanted to take it the next turn, a spearman was defending the city. So, they also get one best defender after attacking a city!

Feelgood:

Your post is a little confusing regarding who is attacking whose cities. But if attackers are approaching your city, and no reinforcements are about, does it not make sense to rush a spearman in the city to help defense? That's what the AI thinks.

If you like hard knocks then go on. I suggest rounding out your experience. I jumped to Monarch a bit too soon and struggled for awhile.

My test is to clear the HOF and fill it with victories on totally random setups, with no restarts or reloads (unless you get the same civ as in the past 2). If you loose then start over!

i went o monarch before winning regent, i recently went back to regent because monarch was really hard and found it too easy so back up to monarch.
;)

Bingen, I presume what Feelgood meant is that the AI took a city that had no defenders with a warrior, and the AI had no backup spearmen around. But lo and behold the next turn the city was defended by a spearman. Where'd the spearman come from?

Nasssty cheating AI, it cheatsss, it does, preciouss.

Kime11 - I agree. It'd be much more interesting if the AI was tough to beat without it getting all these free cheats. If the AI was, well, like another human. Pity they still can't program one that good.

OzJeremy: Yea... you`re right. My city was undefended and a japanese warrior attacked the city. Yes! only a warrior with no spearman around (2 tiles). Also, no road nearby. So, no backup sperman could defend the city. Rushing was not viable because it would need 2 citizens. The city had 2 citizens. So, conclusion: cheat or bonus!

One time I lost my 2 impis attacking a reg warrior next to my capital, then it took capital. Then next turn a spear appeared and the warrior moved towards my last city. Obviously some cheatin' going on there.

A lot of folks on this board play at Monarch because Emperor and above add a significant requirement of micromanagement. After you beat a few Monarch games and advance up to Emperor and beat a few Emperor games, you know what I mean. I have super fun playing at Monarch and every once in a while play a higher level if I want to give myself a headache. Still, I find Monarch to be a comfortable level for me and so add challenges at that level of play - One City Challenge, SGs, Crazy starting locations, Always War.

My advice is play where its fun for you. If you are advancing on the AI too easy and you feel your style of play outclasses the AI, then move up. You'll lose plenty of games right after you move up and may even go down a level to have a 'fun' game but ultimately you find your niche.

Good post.:goodjob: You are right on the money. Find your
right difficulty and have fun.[dance]

I don't really find the Regent to Monarch jump a big one. A few extra units, a bonus here and there. It's the Monarch to Emperor jump that's the biggy... and although I have won a couple of games on Emperor, I personally find Monarch to be more fun, because there's less war (don't get me wrong, I like a good war, but when it's constantly one after the other, I get a bit sick of it).
