I don't know if this version is definitive - I learnt it at school over 35 years ago. I think it dates back to the 1940's originally.

A for Pint
B for Mutton
C for th'Highlanders
D for Dumb
E for Or
F for Pheasant
G for Police
H for Beauty
I for Novello
J for Oranges
K for Cavern
L for Leather
M for Sis
N for Lope
O for The wings of a dove
P for A penny
Q for The bus
R for Askey
S for Ofarim (probably not original - ask your grandparents about Esther and Abi)

When I first went to school we had to recite
A for Apple
B for Ball
C for Cat
D for Dog
E for etc.. .

This was a subversiive parody of rote learning - I guess you had to be there....

lol ok i found the 'tum-ti-tum'bit good and i get what your meaning but yer you probably had to be there :)
 
While we're on the subject of odd alphabets, does anyone have a pointer to the alphabet where the examples are all misleading or silent, such as:

A as in Aesop.
C as in Chiton.
H as in Haute.
J as in Jalapeno.
K as in Knight.
M as in Mnemonic.
O as in Oedipus.
P as in Pneumonia.
T as in Tsunami.
V as in Voila.
W as in Wrought.
X as in Xylophone.
 
LOL my grandma used to say the P is silent as in Swimming

how is GHOTI pronouced?
