Simultaneous moves make MP terrible

MP is totally a waste with simultaneous moves. Not only does it waste hours of slow progress but is so unfare by whatever basis they use. I recently was in a game and watched my enemy move no less tahn 4-5 units wiping out my units before I could even do anything. Not once. but many times. WTH?

Really, is this the best they could come up with. I really hope the expansion is good because i have had enough of MP for this and many other reasons; disconnects, slow, locking up, waiting way to long with a terrible lobby menu. It really does stink.

I am sorry you had that happen to you. In many ways moving from single player to multiplayer is very frustrating. However, I believe playing mp is worth it. Playing against a human opponent creates more of a challenge, which is SOO much better than playing the ai. Some people dont like mp and that is ok, but I disagree that mp stinks, in fact, I quite enjoy it!!

Enjoying it is totally differentthan it just not working. Civ is a trunedbased game. Why did they make the combat in MP more like a RTS? I am guessing to speed it up. But who cares. I woulld wait an extra minute or two if I knew the combat was fair.

Essentially Civ 5 multiplayer combat is completely different, but at its base the game is still turn based. While some exploits within the system do exist I maintain that civ 5 mp combat is better than single player combat by a long shot.

One tip I would give you if you want to try combat in multiplayer again is to fortify all units which could be attacked immediately at the start of the turn. Also make sure you have enough army and if possible scouts on your enemies- you can't rely on having your opponents being predictable and terrible at fighting like the ai is.

I understand that multiplayer in its current state is not for everyone so if you prefer single player, that's okay.

What is sounds like is that your opponent had a much faster PC than you and that is why you were always losing simu battles. Fortunately that is not what most players playing MP experience on a regular basis.

I also would contest your opinion that turn based combat is better than simultaneous moves, yes it can be a bit off a race to move first in critical situations, but turn based combat leaves you completely helpless if the other person has his turn before you do. All you can do is sit their and watch as he destroys your units first. Personally even with the problems with simu moves combat, I'd rather take my chances with that than not have any chance at defense at all.

I think a 2 phase turn would be best. Everyone gets to do all they want except move units. Then a second phase allows averyone to move in order. Iut wouldbe much more fair.

If you're interested in a purely sequential mp experience, my friend and I wrote a service that allows you to setup and play a sort of automated pbem style game. It basicly uses the HotSeat mode in Civ 5 but handles uploading the save files and getting them to the next player.

It's pretty slick! You can check it out over at the Giant Multiplayer Robot

A turnbased strategy game shouldnt really be based on who has the fastest PC or fastest connection.

It wouldnt be so bad if we could at least OPT to play on a turn by turn basis. But its not even possible! I mean holy why cant we even decide how to play? I have no idea why they removed the option to even play real turn based. If we wanted to invest more time to get a better game experience why not just let us?

Its not like it would be hard to implement. Its already like this vs the AI anyway. You can really see here that they basically designed the game completely around singleplayer.
Multiplayer is a mess, no options, bad lobby, connection problems etc etc.. U cant even save, joining a game in progress or rejoining after a crash is like a lottery, sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt.Faster Pc wins the battle?? I mean WTH are they thinking?

giving the option of turn based play or not is ok. Not even giving this option however is unforgivable for a Civ game if u ask me..
