Slow as a week in prison (but occasionally zippy!)

I have a nearly new laptop with a decent graphics card and all that malarkey. However, Civ runs like an arthritic dog, especially when I reach the middle ages. However, the strange thing is that although it runs slowly about 75% of the time, other times it zips along smashingly - sometimes for whole turns, other times for only a few seconds. This leads me to believe that it's perfectly capable of running Civ quickly, yet most of the time it can't do it. I have the same problem regardless of map size, MP or SP, mods or no mods etc.

As you can tell from the opening paragraph, I'm not well up on the technical side of things (although I know how to get my specs out of DxDiag if I need to).

Has anyone ever experienced the problem of "fast and slow" civ, and if so, is there any way to prevent it?

Thanks!

Did your laptop overheat when the gameplay was slow?

Thanks for replying Infantry.

My clever friend solved the problem in the end. It was to do with the CPU. Apparently it wasn't allocating all its resources to Civ.

So to answer your question, it wasn't overheating before but it does get very warm now!
