I had problems with slow game. Very slow in late game and on big maps. So i upgraded my RAM from 512mg to 2 gig. But after playing a few hours with the new ram i can hardly see any significant preformance increase!? How can this be? Are there any adjustments i have to make to take use of my new RAM increase? Any basic computer tips? Someone help please!

Is it late in the epic game? Civ has always been very processor intensive. It may not have been the ram slowing things down, but your pc speed. Anywhich, I prescribe Civ3

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.86GHz

The P-M is a good chip clock-for-clock but towards the end of large maps there's just a hell of a lot of instructions for a cpu to do. Wiping out another civ raizing all their cities is once way of lightening the load :D

Update DirectX. There are threads on that. Follow the advice in the other threads about late game slowdowns. There are several (at least) .

The x300 is more a "thin and light" notebook product than a gaming device. That's in the article I linked to you previously :goodjob: .

The game is a dog for many people late game, myself included. Perhaps a patch will help soon. Possibly it'll take a computer built in 2008 :(

Its not late in the game, its a standard size map and normal gamespeed. I've read many posts about slow down, and civ3 is out of the question;)

However, ALL my previous feedbacks on my slow-down problems advised me to upgrade my RAM, couse that would make a big difference. So isn't it very peculiar that i can hardly see any preformance increase in gamespeed?

Help much appriciated!

If you upgraded the RAM, the odds are your page file is still at its old size - set it to at least as much as you have RAM and you'll probably see an improvement in performance.

X300 is your problem.

Well im no expert but from what i've read i somewhat doubt that.

Yes that may very well be, but how and where do I do that?

Thank you

Under Win2k, it's Control Panel>System>Advanced>Performance Options

EDIT: Actually I just noticed from your dxdiag list that you've got the virtual ram set for over 2 gig already. Your video card is a little behind the curve, and that's probably not helping the processor. Don't know what your upgrade options are there though...may not even be any.

Im seeing in the settings for virtual memory (is that page file?) that the file size is currently set on 768mb, The maximum allowed settings are 1536mb, and the recomended settings are 3070mb. What does this mean, and should I change it?

And one other thing, after my ram upgrade, i had almost 2 gb less free discspace on my harddrive, Should this happen?

Thank you

According to your dxdiag2 file, your page file is already more than what you last posted... I'm not sure, but I suspect you have "let Windows manage page file size" checked, and the 2 GB free space you lost was Windows expanding the page file.

I don't make a claim at being an expert, but have you defragged your hard drive? (through the Program menu, or by right-clicking on the drive and selecting Tools)

If it's a notebook I would say that the decrease in harddisk space results from an expanded 'hibernate' file. That's at least for my notebook.

Well i have now set the virtual memory to recomeneded 3070mb, i guess if its recomended its the best.
And decrease of disc space due to page file or virtual memory sound logical. And yes my hard drive is defragged and error checked.

On a notebook you have 3 options:

Turn off (Notebook is off and you have to restart Windows when switching off)
Standby (Windows still alive but using the minimum of energy)
Hibernate (Memory is saved to a hiberfil.sys file which is as large as your memory, PC turns off. When restarting windows the hiberfil.sys file is used and you are exactly where you have been before starting hibernate. That means if you had an open winword before after the restart you have winword in the same state).

Hope that makes it somehow clearer.

I've told you ram wont help much. You can try to format HDD and reinstall windows to ensure that you have done everything you could, but i doubt there will be much difference. And you really should turn the virtual memory OFF ( or set it to 512mb or something ), because system uses virtual memory when it runs out of ram. You have 2 gigs of ram, what do you need 3gig pagefile for???
