The pace of cIV is a problem to me as it is for many other cIV users, since it feels like the game is rushing me towards a space race with no real option for other win types.

I know how to mod the Civ4GameSpeedInfo.xml file to generally slow down research, alter great leader rate, growth, number of turns in the game etc but I found that the real problem is not the general tech rate as such.

What I have found after playing the game for some time now is that research goes faster and faster because of the expanding economy. In ancient times it takes me 8-20 turns to develop a tech in vanilla depending on how much I beeline but in modern times it only takes me 3-7 turns to develop a tech depending on beelining. The results in my games is that modern time units and improvements are hardly ever used because of space race race techs popping out every 3-7 turns.

What I would like to do in a mod is to slow down research depending on age:

20% higher research cost for ancient era techs
25% higher research cost for classical era techs
30% higher research cost for medieval era techs
35% higher research cost for renaissance era techs
40% higher research cost for industrial era techs
50% higher research cost for modern era techs

At the same time I will mod some of the numbers in the Civ4GameSpeedInfo.xml to reflect the slower pace of the game but the general point of the mod is to allow me and if I upload others to enjoy the great aspects that vanilla civ4 has without feeling rushed towards space race especially at the higher difficulty levels.

Now where I need help is which xml file(s) I need to mod to slow down research by era or individually tech by tech. If someone can point me in the right direction I would be grateful.

Thanks a lot vilu. Just what I was looking for. I don't know how I missed your original post when i used search but I really appreciate that you brought it to my attention.
