SMAC for Mac

I have been playing SMAC off and on since it came out. I've terraformed entire planets to 100% fungus and covered them with grav supply ships, and finished the game with each faction at least once (Miriam pisses me off).

I'm all grown up now though, and getting a Mac for my multimedia work, and would really love to have SMAC on it. It's actually the one thing holding me back from getting a new Mac!

I've seen the laptop collection to get it new for PC, but nothing for Mac... please help if you can!

Unfortunately, the Mac version is out of print. Ocasionally a copy will come up for sale on eBay. They generally sell for around $40 although I've seen them go for $70.

The Alien Crossfire Expansion is even more rare.

If you are getting a Mac with an Intel chip, you would not be able to play SMAC. SMAC requires the "Classic" mode under OS X. To run the Classic mode requires an OS 9 system folder. And OS 9 is definitely NOT "universal"!

In any event, SMAC runs slow under OS X. There was a carbonized version that ran a lot faster, but as OS X has progressed 10.2 to 10.3 to 10.4, the carbonized version crashes more often. (There is a certain frustration in issuing a go to order when you have a network of mag tubes and waiting a minute for the unit to move across the screen.)

My sister's computer is too old to support OS X. I noticed that SMAC runs quite a bit faster under OS 9.

I played SMAC on OSX 10.2.8-No problems at all except a few very minor ones.

I found it 4 or 5 years ago-I think even before Civ III.

And Miriam makes me mad issed:, playing as her or vs. her.

that's too bad about the compatability issues... I guess 4 or 5 years really makes a difference with running the darn thing. I've decided to custom build my own new computer (PC) instead of getting a Mac... ah well.
