Is there any formular for avoiding these damn things?

You can be allied with someone and then out of the blue - SNEAK ATTACK!

Must be something to do with your power/population as everything else seems to be related to that.

I happens to me with alarming regularity. I must admit, I get it more when I do dominate - but surely that's illogical, to start a war war with someone far stronger than yourself?

The mysteries of the AI...

Ah, the illustrious AI...We marvel at the widom behind it's conception...We relish the possibilities of everlasting random game play with no need of finding other people to have a game with from 9 pm until 3 am when we have to get up and go to work (or school as some of us have it) in the morning...And then, we get all pi$$ed off!!! Because the AI isn't fair & it cheats...We end up wanting to rip our fu***ng hair out, or put cigarettes out on our eyeballs. Because, all of the AI nations are one big happy family, who are ALL out to get us! Signing secret pacts against us...Canceling alliances as soon as they are expected to contribute something in return...And so on...And so on...

Um . . . yeah. Anyway . . . people here complain a lot about the AI. Yeah, the AI has a lot of problems, but hey, think about how old the game is. Wasn't the AI state-of-the-art at the time it was made? The best it could have been? Maybe I'm wrong; I really don't know squat about computers.

On another note, I don't think I've ever been sneak-attacked by an ally. They meet with me first and demand something unreasonable, then break the alliance when I refuse. Then they sneak attack.

A sneak attack while you were *allied* to the nation? Hardly. Maybe if you got a peace treaty, but seriously; how can a nation attack you whilst being allied to you?!?!?

Yes, there is a way--just attack them first, the AI under Diety, will break treaties and alliance, every 3 turns or whenever they have a almost valid excuse.

Usually, i make pacts for the following purposes:
1) to get their map
2) to exchange techs
3) to request gifts

If #3 is not an option, the hell with them. #1 and #2 are usually usefull at the beggining of da game, so after that - if you're not my color, you're not my friend.

I don't want to have a big go at the AI, I love the game and all it's faults. If the faults were too big we wouldn't play, right?

But I was attacked by an Ally once - it happend way back and hasn't happened since, but I got so dispondent becuase I was repeatedly told I couldn't attack an ally without breaking the allience first (not that I wanted to attack my allies, of course...)

I actually stopped playing for a week or so becuase it annoyed me so much!

Even the though the manual says that they would have to cancel an alliance first, I think they just conveniently forget sometimes.

I almost never ask for or accept an alliance. I haven't yet seen that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. But that aside, I strongly recommend that you hit the F3 key EVERY TURN towards the end of a long game, and then hit "Check Intelligence" for each and every Civ. The reason is that their peace treaties tend to be forgotten after about 3 turns, and the "Peace with" message changes into a "Contact with" message. At that point they'll think nothing of wading in with "exploratory" troops. As soon as you spot the change, just click "Send Emissary" and renegotiate peace. It's remotely possible this could have been happening to you with alliances too.

Yeah the computer is damn stubborn and has a tendency to "forget" your lost contact very quickly...

But whilst peace treaties may last a while at least, alliances never do. Not whilst I play anyways. It would be nice to an alliance last a LITTLE while at the very least, and not be broken up for some minor disagreement after like 5 turns

As I play on MGE, the AI is extremely hostile, slipping from even Worshipful to Icy in a handful of turns. I have learned to basically forgo diplomacy. I *might* sign a peace treaty with another Civ if I'm going to want to force him to remove his troops, and I do sometimes trade techs early in the game (before I have such a huge tech advantage no one has anything I don't already have). I've given up trying to get maps, as well. I have to give them so much to get them friendly enough that its just not worth it. really the only thing I use the negotiation window for is demanding tribute.
