For some reason, I can't get the right combination of words to google it, I kept getting stuff about failed burns.
So I finally got that Petty DVD downloaded (I had it before but it got scratched and thus refused to rip) and I noticed something odd:
It plays just fine in a DVD player, or if you play it as a whole DVD, but if you open the individual VOB files, they're abnormally short (15 seconds at most) and start skipping when you reach the end.
I know it's not copy-protected (as it's fan-made DVD), and it only happens with that DVD. It seems to encode to AVI just fine with avi.NET, although it's a pain because I only want a certain part and it's hard to tell if I've got the right VOB or not (no proper chapters, just every 5 minutes).
What could cause it?
More clues:
1) I burned the original on the XP computer using Nero. It never showed the problem on XP.
2) The original disc did it on the Vista computer but I assumed it was the scratch (without changing some settings DVD Decrypter gave i/o error)
3) The new disc was burned with ImgBurn. I had it verify the disc and it said it was fine.
4) I used K-Lite Codec Pack on both the XP and the Vista. As well, the problem happens with both VLC and Media Player Classic.
5) Both DVD-Rs were maxells, although the problem also happens with the VOB files on the hard drive.
6) I would test on mom's XP machine but she has only a CD-RW
.
7) Happens whether I grab the VOB with a program or direct copy/paste. Also happens if I select certain chapters with programs (e.g. DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper)
So maybe it's to do with Vista?
Also, what would cause AutoGK to make COM Surrogate crash? I was putting the file on the desktop and it popped up saying it had stopped working and makes me a bit nervous. Googling says its to seperate codec problems and explorer.exe.
I didn't see explorer.exe disappear or anything but my head was turned. Googling says DivX or Nero but I was using the Xvid codec and I don't have Nero installed.
Edit: Ran the file through GSpot, if it helps any:
Another edit: It encoded just fine, no skipping whatsoever in the AVI.
