Some new units, suggestions!

You guys have some odd an impractical ideas for new units. THe units that you people want are a) too modern b) would require the game to be compleatly changed. I'm tired of newbs saying " they should add terrorists". What the hell what would terorist add to the game. There is no spot for them in the game. they aren't even part of an army. "They should add better modern workers". Why there is no point. that has alreaddy been implemented. At the discovery of Industrialization theworkers rate is increased by 50%. plus there is another 50% bounus if your government is Democracy, and If you add the 50% bounus of the Industdrial trait, it sems to me that the workers ore fine as is. Frankly it makes my sick what you people are suggesting. Most of the good suggestions are coming from experienced posters like thestonesfan, Xen, and LouLong. Don't worry though you'll get there some day.

The point of adding new unit to the game is to enhance the current game as is and to fill in the gaps. there are as of now several very large gaps in the units lines which I will out line below. They other big thing needed regarding units is Flavour units. A complete set of Flavour units for every civ, or at the very least for every culture group is a must need. Is it just me or does it seem strange that the Zulu build European style Knights, Pikemen, and Riflemen. So that being said here are my suggestitons for new units:

Horse Archer (Ancient and Mideval)
Musket Infantry (between Musketman and Rifleman)
Dragoons (between Knights and Calvary)
Attack helicopter
modern upgrade to Marines and Paratroopers (the current ones are simply too weak)
Modern and/or near future Infantry(next 1-20 years)
Spy Plane (if you want an expanation just ask)

Improved naval and air units are also needed. I don't use the often enough though to say exactaly what. thesonesfan's list seames good though.

@ SoCalian, I agree with you about workers (they're fine as they are) but I think your wrong to simply settle for a few extra generic units and flavour units. People are modding graphics for new types of units all the time so if individuals feel that certain units need to be added then they should download suitable graphics and add specs for the unit via the editor - voila, problem solved :) . If you don't feel that terrorists should be included then don't include them but unfortunately terrorists have been a reality throughout the 20th century and many people would want to represent this fact in the game (fortunately they are able to do so via the editor). If you want to discuss the cosmetics of the game thats fair enough but I personally would like to suggest ideas that can't be fixed via the editor and downloads. I don't post ideas because I think that they are going to be considered/implemented by the developers but simply because I find it enjoyable discussing how the core game could be expanded and improved and Im interested in what others think. I personally think that in some respects Civ 2 is better than Civ 3 (e.g: better trade system and espionage system, events, videos of advisors and wonders instead of pop ups, terraforming etc) and I dont want to be similarly dissappointed if there is a Civ 4 so Im glad that people dont just discuss types of unit because this wouldnt generate any new or creative ideas for developers to learn from. Civ 3 also needs more non-military units too e.g. merchants, diplomats, missionaries, trading ships, shamens, various different kinds of great leaders etc, but because of limitations in the core game, the roles of these units cannot be represented.

Thanks, SoCal. It's nice to see someone recognize that my wisdom is supreme. :D

Seriously, I don't think i can even play with the regular units and unit settings anymore. They are too weak or unrealistic. I think that some units need to represent the huge jump in battlefield technology and tactics that they were. Civil War infantry were the first soldiers to be armed with rifled muskets. Such destructive capacity in personnel weapons had never been seen before. They should be able to obliterate any prior units easily. But in the game, they are at losing odds attacking a fortified knight. Ridiculous. Napoleonic Line Infantry tactics revolutionized the battlefield and represented the first conscripted nationalistic army. They aren't even in the game.

Yes, a lot of units cannot be represented with the game rules. But a lot more can than are.

the marines and paratroopers in my opinion are weak because they require jets and stuff to be the first attackers. just make assloads of 4 bombers, 2 carriers, 4 jets, 2 battleships, a sub of your choice, an aegis cruiser (not really necessary if you have a sub or vice versa), and a transport or 2 filled with a few defensive units and marines. enough to occupy atleast a coastal city

I thought these forums were made in order to allow players to make suggestions... even if they are "odd and impractical"... no disrespect, but being all players (and game purchasers), our ideas are just mere suggestions that may or may not be listened...

but if there is a mass flood of rather crappy suggestions, and the guys at Atari think that is what the players want... well, just think if your ideas will make the game more fun- or easyer for the human, the easy levals are easy enough, and I actually prefer them some times :), i find there is no reason to add more way ways to kick the crap out of the AI 7 times over before they hit the ground, and would prefer that atari concetrates its new unit making skills on making civ A) more historical (read; Cataphract :D), and B) more fun

you can dogfight u nkow if a city was defended by a figter normally if u sent a bomber it gets shot, but if u sent the fighter to bomb the same city, its an air fight and your fighter will almost always shoot down the other plane. That is what you use fighter bombing for, bombing cities to find and kill enemy fighters in the city before u bomb them.

New Units:

This might be a dumb suggestion to some of you but since they have ICBMs and tactical nukes as a source of WMD(Weapon of Mass Destruction) Maybe they can add in a biological or chemicle weapons? They can be used to kill civilions or used on enemy troops.

Chemical warfare as used in WWI would be the best representation of this. If done right it could be very effective and devestating. They should probobly have an advantage over units that are fortified. THe reason being is that fortified units, in the indusdrial age when it would come, are entrenched low in the ground. Since chemical weaponry naturaly sinks to the lowest point it should, therefore, have an advantage over fortified units. Now then the chemical weaponry should also be an artility unit of sorts in that it would be a bombard unit without attack or defense, but wuold not have the leathal land bombardment flag. Natualy some of the unit, if not all, would have gas masks. Thus it would be prevented from destroying the whole unit. That is how I see chemichal/biological weapons.

The problem is that you would have to extend the game because if you pack the game with all these units then they become obsolete after a 2 or 3 techs. If the decided to create more turns by making the beginning jump from 4000bc to 3980bc instead of 3950bc and so on for the rest of the game is the only way to incorporate a lot of new units without frustrating the user

Yeah that is posible and would require a lot of balancing to get it right. If done corectly though it would make thew game far superior to what it is now.
