Hello, I love Civ2. I am not very good at it though, but i do play it a lot.

Firstly, does anyone know where i can get hold of a HARD COPY of the Civ2 manual? I really hate using ACROBAT, it is such a pain to check something out in the manual on the CD-ROM 'mid-game'. I really miss the documentation that used to come with games.
In fact, being a bit out of touch with PC's generally, i didn't realise for about 6 months that there WAS a manual on the CD-ROM, and learnt to play Civ 2 from scratch on my own - trial and error.

In my local shop i see all sorts of Sid Miers games Civ this and Civ that. I have what appears to be standard Civ2 (and downloaded the classic patch). What would you recommend i bought next?

Altough my ENTIRE style of playing needs to change, there are a couple of things that i do not understand at all, even with the manual.

i) Once i have zoomed into a city, I have heard that i can change resources around, switch between scientists, and entertainers and so on. I don't really follow....

ii) Special resources, i.e PEAT, COAL, GEMS am i supposed to build a city ON those squares or in the VICINITY of....

Thankyou.

To get a manual, you must go to the store and buy a copy of Civ2 while it is in a box that rattles a lot. The more expensive your version, the greater the odds of you getting the manual. I really don't know what else to say.

To move people around in your city window... First, you mist click on the city so the city window pops up. Now, somewhere in the upper left-hand corner, you should see a partial map with about 21 squares. This is the "city radius." Now, click on one of the squares within the city radius that is currently being used (i.e. has food/shields/arrows on it). That square should stop producing anything. If you look at the top bar (the population roster), the last person you should see should look like an Elvis Presley. That's an entertainer. If your city is 5 people or greater, click on the entertainer. He will become a taxman. Click again and he becomes a scientist. Entertainers add 2 luxuries (before the effects of marketplaces or banks), taxmen add 2 gold coins (before marketplaces or banks), and scientists add two beakers (before libraries or universities).
To reassign this person to a different square, just click somewhere else on the city radius. He will work on the square you click on. Note that if you click again while there are no entertainers to place, the people will all jump back to where the computer thinks they should work. Don't worry, just re-place them.

As for city resources... Press "control+G" to get a large grid. Build a city anywhere (or look at an existing city) and look at the white-emphasized shape it makes. Again, that is the city radius. Any special resources within the city radius are available for the city you just built. Now, remember this shape (a 5x5 square with the corners cut off) while placing your cities. If you're good, you can set your city such that there are four special resources within the radius. I'll try to make a little chart... It might not show up clearly here because I don't know enough HTML. Just cut and paste it into notepad.
