Sometimes I don't get warned before an AI civ builds a wonder. Why?

Sometimes I don't get warned before an AI civ builds a wonder. This has happened to me a few times when I was playing on Deity. (so far I'm only up to my 4th game though) Is it because the AI rush-built the wonder? Note that I still do get the warning when the AI starts building.

The only time I have 'seen' this is when it is announced that a civ is about to finish a wonder and another civ is about to finish the same wonder. When the first civ finishes the wonder, the second civ changes its production to a different wonder and then builds that one on their turn.

That is the only way I have seen it happen in SP. In MP I have seen it happen a lot when you are not the host player.

Do you have any more detail as to how it happened for you?

Duke of Marlbrough,

I can understand the situation when the AI switches to another wonder because another AI has built the current wonder. However, in the few cases I experienced, this was not the cause. In fact, in the most recent case, no other civs were building any wonder. It was just the Aztecs building the Pyramids. But they did switch from Hanging Gardens to Pyramids. (but both of them are 400 shields right?)

If I remember correctly from my previous encounters, there wasn't any wonder switching before it occurred. I wonder why I'm not getting the warning just before the wonder was built.

I think you just misssed the messages. Happens to me all the time, and then I get mad that I didn't know the Zulus were building that damn Cure for Cancer! I was only 2 turns away from it!

willemvanoranje,

Hmm... I don't think I missed the messages. I definitely didn't miss the one saying that they have starting building. I didn't get any message saying that they've almost completed building. In other levels (Emperor and below) I remember I always get a warning just before they finishing building a wonder (just in time for me to rush-build it).

I've had this problem too. A message comes up saying that the AI has started building a wonder. One day they just build the wonder without the warning that it's almost done. However, most of the time the warning that a wonder is almost completed is presented.

I was wondering. What if the AI was building two wonders, say one requiring 400 shields and one requiring 600 shields. What happens if at 500 shields it switches the 600 one to the 400 one. I'm just guessing, I haven't investigated. To really be sure what's going on you would have to find a game where this happens and use cheat mode to investigate the city before and after the wonder is built.

It tells the host when someone is about to build a wonder? Does it also give them the chance to rush buy? That's sort of unfair.. it doesn't even tell the clients when someone starts building wonders.. does the host get any other unfair advantages?

Hmmm.... I can't think of anything else that would make it so the message can't be seen. I would suggest trying to save your game every turn or so until it happens again then use cheat mode to look around at the comp civ before and after it happens. Let me know if you catch them in the act and have saved game file sof it. I would be interested to know what happened.

The host receives all the messages that you normally get in SP, while the other players get occasional ones. I really noticed it when I hosted a game (normally I was the one dialing into the game) and saw how different it was. You get to see the comp players moving more also. As the host, you can also tell which computer players the other human has run into by watching the turn indicator in the bottom right corner of the screen. It shows the color of who's turn it is. If it stays on a comp player color for awhile, they are most likely interacting with another human player. Then you can try exchanging maps with the comp after you think the other human has and know where they are.

Getting back on topic... You might also want to be sure you have the current patches and such just to see if that may help. Otherwise, it is odd indeed.
