Sound problem

On a Pentium III with Windows 98 and an Ensoniq sound card (as marketed by Creative),
I can't get sound to play properly. No matter what I try, I get v-e-r-y s-l-o-w
sound. I tried downloading civsnd.zip. This apparently makes General Midi a sound option, but I still get sound that plays very slowly,
even though the instruments are interesting
and different. I could play with no sound,
but it really doesn't seem worth it to me.
Maybe I'm not enough of a fanatic. Any
suggestions?

First, are you playing the game in DOS mode or in a DOS *window*? You should be running it in DOS mode. This will solve most problems, as the game was not designed for windows but for DOS.

Secondly, have you tried the PC speaker sound option? It should definitely work as it has nothing to do with your sound card and the sounds are fine. In fact, I've gotten used to them over the years and now that I have a newer computer I haven't made the switch, so I think you can enjoy the PC speaker sounds.
