I am running Col on my PC smoothly, except for the sounds. I don't hear music, sound effect or whatever.
Can someone help me out by telling me what I can do about it?
Thanks in advance!

If you are running anything 98 or before go to the setup.exe in the Col file and set up sound. However anything post 98 and sound doesnt work. It is a bug in how the software works. The sound files are incompatable in a Millieum, NT, or XP format. Short of refiting the sound files it is not possible to fix.

That is too bad. So I'll just have to keep playing it without sound...
Thanks for the reply!

PS I am running XP pro...

You can run DOS version in DOSbox with sounds.

But on my PC (XP) there is also something strange when playing Colonize in DOSbox: Some (only some, not all) of the sounds are still missed. I remember, when a wagontrain run into a town, there was a sound for that. Thisone don't work. The only thing I can get working here is a rustle, when using one of the available soundcard settings. Also there was a sound if a building is finished. Thisone is also missing. Most(?) other sounds work. Muskets and Guns are firing, Ships also have some sounds and so on.

Any Idea, what to do?

How I got sounds (and effects) in XP Pro SP2:
1. Download and install VDMSound (http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/)
*If you right click on colonize.bat and select "Run with VDMS" now, you may encounter problems, as I did.
2. Start->Run type" "sysedit" (without quotes)
3. Add this line to your autoexec.bat: "set rtvmexp=0" (without quotes)
4. Reboot
5. Right click colonize.bat and select "Run with VDMS"
