Hello MOO gamers,
Being a MOO II fan for a long time now i was working on a RTS version since one year.
I am looking for some people who wants to test the fan project Space Tribes.
Here the YouTube link for all those who wanna have a look.
Now in HD and with InGame Sound (Which was not easy under Vista Wink

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5--7BTszs8

Additionally to the existing tech tree the are also Planetoids, Anti Matter Clouds, Lensman (artificial Heroes), own Space Monsters and more..

Also some tech has to be changed cause its an RTS now:
- Time Warp Facilitator allows a ship to shift in and out of the time-space continuum, enabling it to fire twice as fast as normal
- Hyper-X Capacitors allow ship beam weapons to fire at a +50% range
- Evolutionary Mutation increases the mystic abilities giving your pilots a slight look into future adding +40 to their offense and +50 to their defense.
...
Balancing still has to be done - but well in the original the game was most times ended when getting mauler devices.

Here some Screenshots from 145:

I'm at work so I'm unable to view the video. However, is it similar to galactic civilizations in that all planets are visible on the galaxy screen? Will there be a separate screen for battles, or is this done in the galaxy screen?

I think it's funny that you're working on a MoO 2-inspired RTS, while I'm working on a MoO 1-inspired TBS

What language is this developed in? What, if any, third party libraries are you using?

It did put me in mind of GC, but that is TBS. It was too hard for me to follow the youtube as it is pretty small. You may have to look to change the sounds and pix or run the risk of getting a cease order from the holder of the Moo2 rights.

I pretty much had to give up on RTS a few years back due to age and bad fingers and eye sight. Still can play real time RPG's as they tend to not have that much going on at any point in time.

Funny I was thinking of playing Moo2 when I saw this thread.

Only with the elerian there is everything visible. Otherwise there is a fog of war which depends on the scanner range one has researched ( Also on battlescanner tech and navigator skills of leaders).
Look in fullscreen mode on youtube: its recorded in 1280x720 pixel size. Do you think the graphics are a problem ? According to orion nebula they wanted to replace it even in the 90s by some 3D models ( gladly they did not). It's written in C# cause me used to C++ back in the days working as a software engineer :). No libraries else used.
Here two screenshots from advanced monsters introduced in 1.52 as a late game content which need some TOS knowledge ;)

The art assets are lifted directly from MoO 2. MoO 2, along with art and sound, is copyrighted. So I can't just make a new game and call it "Master of Orion 2", or rip off the art or sounds, and sell it.

However, if this is just for your personal enjoyment, and you want to share it with others for free, I don't think it present a problem. But if you want to sell it, you'd have to create your own artwork/sounds, or have someone else make it for you, to avoid copyright infringments.

I just watched the game, and it looks nice. My only concern is that it might be going a bit too fast, I missed how you told planets to build stuff. I didn't even notice that the bottom is for that, and for other stuff, but you did things too quickly for me to be able to tell how. But it's impressive! You've got the galaxy working, AI working, combat working, production working. It looks to me like just a few things to polish in-game, and improve the main menu at beginning, then it's done. Unless research isn't implemented yet.

I thought about going full screen, but figured it would just distort things. Looks good in your screen shot. I was just saying that lifting things straight out of Moo2 could be an issue.

It won't be as long as it is free and limitied, but you never know. Copyrights are lost, if not defended. Sort of like right of ways, let people cross your yard for a few years and you can no longer legally stop them.

The other aspect is that you would need to toss in some replacements to give more appeal to a wider number. Not me, I am fine with it.
