I've more-or-less used this on some 20k 80% archipelago maps to try and spawn a leader. I'd appreciate if anyone can tell me if this works if you don't have a bunch of wonders in your capital on an archipelago map where you have an island to yourself.

1. You have the island to yourself.

2. You train enough of an army to feel confident in defending from a few invasions.

3. You fortify/sentry units in all squares adjacent to your capital and on the coast, except for one which you leave empty.

4. You empty out your capital.

5. You put your units near the capital.

6. You declare war/get into a war with the nearest neighbor that you can reach you.

In my experience with 20k games, the AIs will always come and land in the square next to the capital where I don't have a unit, even if I don't have any units in my other cities. Anyone done something like this in a non-20k game to try and spawn a Military Great Leader without landing on their shores?

I've never tried it with all of the conditions you mention, but I don't see any reason that it wouldn't work. The AI does seem to try to land near the capital if it can, and I've used this type of coastal kill zone for leader-fishing in many games. I usually just locate the AI's preferred landing zone, then nudge it a bit by arranging defensive units so that the AI has to land on flat ground. It just sounds to me like you're just interested in doing more nudging than I do.
