Speed up multiplayer game?

my bf and I play civ 3 on a lan game but after about 5 hours the game usually crashes so i was wondering is there an option or something to make it take less turns than normal to build things and complete scientific discoveries (tech)

I dont want it to be instant but a few less turns to make things and research would possibly help our problem with the game running for so long.

You can chose accelerated production, when setting uo the game. Research won't become faster, though. Therefor you have to use smaller maps.
