June 13, 2006 —Like a man who whips his head around to follow a whiff of perfume, sperm cells turn their heads when they detect even the faintest of sexy female scents, according to a recent study.
The study determined some sperm cells can find ovarian scents even when the scents are diluted 100,000 times. The results were in line with prior research on chemotaxis, the process by which sperm "sniff" sex chemicals and orient themselves in response.
"Sperm have features that are similar to the human nose," said Milos Novotny, who co-led the study and is a professor of chemistry at Indiana University Bloomington.
Sperm cells possess olfactory receptor proteins, Novotny explained, similar to receptors in the nose. They are positioned over the sperm’s membrane, with "sniffers" on the outside and signaling proteins on the inside to relay information.

Well, if they are found to respond to smell, I think that opens the door for a lot of new possibilities.

Until I can think of a way of elaborating w/out getting a little blue, I'll hold my pen. :)

Somewhere in this is double entendre heaven.

well you could engineer a similar smell which the sperm would then go towards the new smell, instead of towards the ovary- not sure really how it would work but that might be what shane is implying.

Or have the ovary give off a sperm-repulsing odor. :) Like shark repellent, but for sperm.

Well better that having the ovary smell something sperm-repellant
It would be easier to elaborate a pill that block the smell receptors of the sperm. Don't ya think !?

Wasnt the a 'pill' for men being planned that basically killed sperm for a few months while taking it, once you stopped taking it sperm went back to the pre 'pill' days, i heard this and thought it could be fairly usefull-so long as men dont end up with a time of the month type thing ;)

Potentials:

*Little blue pills, call them "Queenies". They cause the sperm to be attracted to each other! "you dun' turned them sperm gay", thus ignoring the egg. OMG THE GAY AGENDA at the biological level!

*"the Black Widower"... a little red pill w/ a black hourglass... causes the sperm to attact to and devour the egg.

*the "Pepe le Whew <make exaggerated motion of wiping your hand across your brow in relief>"... eggs emit a foul odor causing the sperm to flee.

This is one of the best newstories since Y2K.

By all means go ahead if you think they'll be good :hatsoff:

I guess a contraception of that sort could be made but I can't imagine it being as reliable as a condom that doesn't allow the sperm into the woman in the first place. So by that logic I don't think this knowledge is potentially groundbreaking.

Interesting though to know they seek out the ovary by scent like bloodhounds on the trail. For some reason this makes me think of the opening scene of Look Who's Talking-which I just watched with my little brother-as a truthful depiction.

every form of contaception has a drawback though, a condom could get a hole in etc...

Wow...when I saw the thread title "Sperm Can Smell", I imagined something entirely different :crazyeye:
 
All cells can "smell" its merely chemoreceptors on the cell membrane.

Why is it amazing a cell with propulsion can resopond to what it "smells"
