Splitting the Normans

I do think a medieval era could potentially have some interesting action, and I wouldn't mind basically swapping out crusading and religion with the exploration of the new world side of things. But at the same time, I don't really want another age transition necessarily. Although if you did make the age transitions as semi-optional, then maybe having another era wouldn't be that bad. So I'd maybe stick with the Mayans through the first couple ages before swapping out to someone else for the new exploration age. But some other game I'd want to go Rome-Norman-England.

This is what bothers me about the inclusion of the Pirate Republic, for example, starting day 1 with Spain and others in Exploration (I'm naming Spain specifically as it acts as chief New-World-colonizer in VII). In our timeline, the golden age of piracy is a result of European overextension and unchecked criminality in the New World colonies. Whereas in VII, it's almost as if the Pirates founded Havana and other Caribbean settlements.
Yeah, they went a little too overboard, pun intended, on the amount of named settlements the Pirates received.

I do think they work better in a game with Ages, at least, rather than the traditional civ games of the past. At least you also get to roleplay with them attacking Spanish treasure fleets. Though at the same time they could have given that role to England and their Sea Dogs. :mischief:
