Why is the no sport in civ. We got the coliseum and that is kind of sporty =)
But sport has been pretty important in the history, mostly by giving some nationalism to the people and through that happiness. I would like to see the olympic games in civ. Automatic peace for a few turns and a winning nation could be declared giving a happiness boost for a few turns. the winner would be the one that has the most sport arenas + some kind of randomness. Perhaps not hte most important thing to add to the game but it would be pretty cool. And it is a little bit strange that that part of the human culture arn't in the game.
just a thought =)

Kinda like, after an ancient world gatherer wonder through embassy. Whoever has the most physical prowess dominant entertainers could particpate in internationally appointed arena's and perform diplomatic actions(olympics) for culture and diplomatic influence gains.

Sport talks. It can show prejudices/friendships between nations and could be an interesting factor that could define relationships between civs in-game. I would be all for more sports in civ at some point.

You could have an olympic games in the modern world with tons of diplomacy stuff around it and a world cup. Thats a great idea but its probably too difficult to put in but I'd love to see it if thats possible.

It may just work like the UN vote in the game just not as significant and can be done more than once a game with an actual winner.

The only problem with Olympics would be the time frame. Every four years = every four turns (late game.. early game even worse). What would be the best time frame to make it 'feel' like the Olympics?

Well maybe it could be spread out abit every 10 wouldnt seem that bad. Besides just the Olympics you could also hasve stuff like the World Cup etc.

A possiblity could be that a random city (based on highest cutlute or soemthing) get to arrange the games and get a huge boost for a couple of turns. Like a mini golden age. And for the nation that hosts it, it would get some diplomatic advatages, like everyone is a at least polite to you or something. It could be a cool thing to the leaders personality, like cesar would like to talk about boxing while ghandi would rather chat a little abour curling. =) Not talking about it all teh time but during the olympic turns.

or you could have just one city build it like a great wonder, and it would give a happiness bonus to your culture, and since it is an international event, what it could do is:

Builder is host, therefore gets large happiness/health bonus or something

All other nations recieve a happiness bonus as well (smaller than builder)

Builder recieves better relations with all nations.

This way you don't have to worry about time frames and all, but would be a neat wonder, since they have been happening for a very long time. And they serve as a global happiness/morale bonus for all nations

Sports could be included to a small extent by having building improvements such as 'football stadium' that could help keep citizens content.

I agree with the Futurama fan. And, what is even worse, take into account that now there are different speed games. In the standard or epic games one turn could represent 1 year, but I have read that there are quick games where you are supposed to be able to finish in a couple or three hours.

From the wonderful civrules Pre-release information:

There will be three game speeds: Quick (mostly for Multiplayer, in Single Player mode (or SP) it is equal to Civ III's Accelerated Production mode), Medium (a bit faster than Civ III, 15-20 hours of gameplay) and Epic (a bit slower than Civ III). All of the game speeds (Quick, Normal, and Epic) retain all the flavor of Civ itself. So even though the speed is different, the feel will not change.

So, I don't know whether it can be implemented in the Quick mode or not. And how smothly would it run.

even if the games were done at the entrence of every era...it would be better then not having anything.lol..its a good concept..

Another way to implement it might be through the old 'report' function of Civs II and III. Instead of letting us know who's the happiest or the wealthiest, have a "xxth Games" report and show us who wins the most medals based on a variety of factors - population, health, how many coliseums etc. As much as I hate to say it, this might be a job for a mod :)

Anyone know if those reports are going to be in Civ IV?

even if done by turn basis....like every 150 turns...and as the game progresses...every 75....especially if theres gonna be a few turns of peace...but the idea about the report option is also a really good one

That is a realy good idea

Plus it seems like it would actualy be implementable
I am not even a sports fan but you are right to say it is a large part of world culture.

Do they have music coming in the knew civ? Because that plays an even bigger role then sports in the world (Vietnam)

music is already implimented, ie with music theory, radio, and such, music is huge, but i think in civ it is a motivation more than any thing else, so you will get other benefits, not just music, J.S. Bach's Cathedral is music, Shakespeare's theatre is music related, radio is music related. So music exists, the only real sports in the game, IIRC, is the colluseum

Rather than making a whole new layer, I think having an "Olympics" wonder is good enough... if you make a modern wonder, then every 4 years, people of other nationalities all over the world like you a little better (thereby getting more angry if their nation goes to war against you), or something not too unbalanced.

i think even better then a wonder...if at a certain tech..the olympics began and were randomly held in random cities..the surrounding area...or just the city would experience a small golden age. a boom period..and for one turn..all combat was suspended
