Sorry if this has allready been asked.

Do you prefer to win with a SS (spaceship) or by conquering the world? This is assuming you are just trying to win and not get a big score.

Personally, I prefer to decide near the end of the game depending on the situation. If I think I can conquer the world in time, I try to win that way, but otherwise I use a SS.

I usually win by conquest. But I always do it late in the game. I don't even think of an offensive war untill I have armor and howitzers. I guess I'll have to adjust my tactics for civ 3.

BlueMonday is my guy - i usually use the same tactics, but if i can - i build the spaceship as well, and i get the 300 possible SS points as well

SS or conquest ?

It doesn't really matter because my strategy is the same for both. I have to reduce the opposing tribes to one or two pet cities in either case. If I dont then they all form an alliance against me especially at king level or higher. So living in peace with other large tribes just doesnt work.

Then capture the pet cities or launch depends on how much time I want to spend on getting a high score.

Agreed BlueMonday!

Either way, SS or conquest, let us up that Civ3 gives us another challenge.

(Yes, I love my howitzers ... but it is getting a tad too easy to hold back waging war until you have the massive fire power that only howitzers can provide: "Happiness is a warm gun" -- especially if it is an overused howitzer barrel!!!)

It entirely depends on why I'm playing the game.

If it's for a personal high score, waiting for howitzers is the most reliable option and going for ALMOST world conquest (keeping one pet enemy city) followed by a spaceship launch to get 400 points.

Or if I'm in "Shadowdale-emulation-mode", I don't wait for howitzers. I just bribe the whole world but still keep a pet and get the 400 SS bonus.

If I'm playing GOTM, then I usually can't afford to wait that long and either start a conquest earlier or (usually at higher level) a spaceship earlier is my choice.

If I'm playing a quick single evening game it's spaceship every time.

Hmmmm I didn't know there was such a thing!!!

But your right Stormerne, that is how I always do it....
The only big difference between my way and the normal way is that I do it as soon as I find the other Civs!! Then it's max tax rate and don't stop buying until they are gone. That way I usually have most of the world under my foot in about 1400-1500 and then I begin to build my glorious empire!!

How can this possibly be? Even on a small map my games take forever. Do you have any tips to make a game quicker without compromising my micromanagement ways?

With regards the spaceship same as all the others. I always kill evryone else and make the spaceship.

How to finish a Civ game in a single evening:
* use a small map with large continental land mass
* set the difficulty level as high you dare
* expand as far as you can
* do not initiate offensive wars
* do not get involved in long defensive wars
* take over all neighbouring cities with cash
* build Great Wall, Marco Polo and UN
* go republic and democracy ASAP
* trade technologies like wildfire
* get lots of beer in

Although I prefer the SS route, I generally at some point become so irritated at other civ's BS, that I feel I HAVE to crush them. If they treated me nicer, they would be allowed to hang around and flourish in their own inept way - but this never happens, eventually, each and every one lines up and gives me the finger and then I have no choice but to smack 'em.

I almost always conquer the world it is so much more fun. In the begining it is all tech, then when I meet a hostile tribe I convert all of my cities into war machines, producing the max # of Units I can, crushing them.

Tell me about it, I'd leave them alone (for a while) if they didn't keep stealing my techs and sneak attacking. I am playing this game at the mo where I am blatantly way ahead in tech but the Japanese keep declaring war on me, every time they do I nail a couple more of their cities and then make peace. Repeat that about twelve times and I now control about half their empire. You think they'd learn wouldn't you?

I always go for the space ship victory. i don't think I have ever conquered the world.

However like others here I occasioanlly use my mighty armies to give the annoying disrespectful AI a good kick in the arse.

Sometimes as well if I find that they're getting a little to big and powerful (and thus a threat during the space race) I'll go to war and cut them down to size a bit - capture some of their trade/industrial base.
