When I have attacked AI stacked ground units I haven't had the same success as in civ2. In civ2, stacked units outside a fortress or city square would be defeated as soon as the strongest unit in the stack bit dust. This does not seem to be the case in civ3. Is it different or just my imagination?

There have been numerous posts on dealing with the large "stacks of death" but no one talks about destroying them the old fashion way.

Also, in civ2 stacks in a fortress or city square woould die one at a time. So far I haven't enountered an AI stack in such a situation but are the so called rules different in civ3.

Correct. An entire stack of units in Civ2 would be destroyed when you killed the strongest unit, (providing, like you said, that they weren't in a fortress or a city) but it is different in Civ3. You have to fight them one at a time, which can be a good thing for you if it is your stack of units being attacked. :p
