In light of Tone's suggestion, here's a challenge for a possible gauntlet game. I finished a 20k Deity Standard sized map game in 1565 AD with Carthage. It won't show up in the update, since it doesn't beat *my* best two times. Anyone want to submit a game as a second?

I'm in if understand what the ground rules are.

Is it that I play a stnd/deity/20k but only submit if I beat your 1565 AD date?

And if so that would become the date to beat?

When we submit are we required to make note of that in this forum?

What is the last date for submission? August 15?

Anything else I need to know?

Thanks.

I don't see a reason why you would have to submit only if you had a faster finish. The monthly gauntlets had 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes. Tone or someone on staff would have to field most of these questions.

Tone care to comment here? Thanks.

@Spoonwood: :goodjob: Thanks for laying down the gauntlet and thanks also go to MinutiaRules for picking it up.

Please submit whatever finish date you get. It doesn't have to even chart on the HOF to count for this challenge. There are Gold, Silver and Bronze positions to play for. The best submission from each player is eligible to receive one of these.

No, although I personally prefer it when I'm playing. (not that that has happened for a while now!) I think that giving details about proposed settings and mini write-ups on submitted games helps promote discussion on how the fastest dates can be pushed back.

What is the last date for submission? August 15?
It is easier for the staff if this is the case but we could extend it for another month given the late start. You two have kicked this off so what do you think?

Anything else I need to know?
Apart from keeping to the HOF rules there's nothing else to consider. Good luck in your attempts!

I'd be interested in playing, but I really doubt that I'll have time if submissions need to be in by August 15.

As I'm really an emperor level player, a deity 20K win may be beyond me anyway. If it works for others, don't weight my vote very heavily.

I'm good with either August or September. Spoonwood intiated this so whatever he declares is fine with me.

Given the potential interest shown I have decided that this gauntlet continue until September 15th. For future gauntlets we shall set up a challenge thread the week before to get a good start for a full month.

Good luck to all competitors in Spoonwood's challenge.

I finished a 1485 game with the Byzantines.

I had a nice 30 shield start.

Note 001 lies on a bonus grassland. I got the Republic slingshot, then Literature, Maths, Construction, and Currency. I drew Feudalism as my free tech, then shot to Education. I had some good SGL fortune, so I reserached both Astronomy and Navigation so I wouldn't run out of builds. Then I researched Banking and the AIs finished Sun Tzu's earlier than I wanted and I ran out of builds. Then I started on Invention, which I traded for from the Mongols a turn later.

The Aztecs plopped down a few cities on my rather large island. Two of them flipped to me, but one flipped back a few turns after I had finally finished a library there. The Mongols landed happily landed some troops on my shores in the middle ages, which got me an elite or two, but no leader. With 5 or 6 ancient cavalry I decided to get a little more aggressive and went to war with the Aztecs. I didn't clear them off the continent, as I got a leader within 10 or so turns. I did clear them off the continent in the last 10 turns or so just for kicks.

I had ivory on my island, so I did get the Statue of Zeus fairly handily. I think I lost The Great Lighthouse after I SGLed the Temple of Artemis and I had traded away Map Making to the Mongols. So, I might have had that also, had I played a little more carefully. The rundown:

Palace-4000 BC
Colossus-2030 BC
Pyramids-1275 BC
Museum of Mausollos-1025 BC
Temple-975 BC
Library-950 BC
Temple of Artemis-925 BC (SGL 1)
Great Library-690 BC
Hanging Gardens-530 BC
Colosseum-450 BC
Statue of Zeus-310 BC
Cathedral-270 BC
Great Wall-70 BC
Sistine Chapel-50 BC (SGL 2)
University-110 AD
Cope's-320 AD
Magellan's-460 AD
Shake's-640 AD
Heroic Epic-700 AD
Newton's-820 AD
Bach's-990 AD
Universal Suffrage-1100 AD
Smith's-1170 AD
TOE-1240 AD
Hoover's-1290 AD
Wall Street-1310 AD
Military Academy-1335 AD
Intelligence Agency-1360 AD
Battlefield Medicine-1390 AD
Pentagon-1425 AD
Research lab-1465 AD
Finish-1485 AD

With an SGL on Writing (or Ceremonial Burial) and one at some other point in the ancient age it's conceivable to cram in all the ancient wonders. Thing is, I'm not sure if it's better to go for the Republic slingshot or to SGL fish on Ceremonial Burial and take Literature/Code of Laws as your free tech.

Nice game Spoonwood. Two cattle and two gold hills! Did you work the gold hills early? Did you notice any lagging effect due to non industrious workers? How about the GLiB?
I'm still in the middle of my "training" game. I've never played for a 20K at any level so I'm getting the timing down plus points of reference. I got all ancient age Ws except for the Oracle, SOZ and ToA. No ivory. It might be a decent score but nothing earth shattering. I have no BGs in the capital. My shields are coming from mined cattle and forests and a couple of mined hills. 28 total after Republic. I think having had some BGs would have sped things up a bit. So I'm hoping to submit to get into the book but my real attempts will come after. I should have time for at least a couple more trys before mid September.

I did use a hill at size 5 I think and then both at size 7... unmined for a bit. I had irrigated one cow and mined the other. So, I had 4 food per turn instead of 5 food per turn. I might or might not use say a forest in such a situation, but here I used the gold hills for a bit quicker research. It made for an interesting tradeoff, as you don't find many starts like this with gold hills. Forests on the other hand come as common enough.

I do notice some "lagging" effects, yes. I've edited in the GLib.

That's outstanding Spoonwood. I'm amazed at the number of things that have to go right in order to get a fast finish.

I had a three-cow, 30spt starting location that took my breath away, but the game did not work out for several reasons. One lux, only horses & saltpeter, no river, neither of my nearest neighbors researched CB (I went straight for Philo, they both went straight for Construction, go figure).

I'd never played as the Dutch before. The cheap harbors and aqueducts were nice, but I missed the cheap universities, and SGLs of course. I'll give it another try as Persia or Byzantines. (I was working on a large-20k-Persia before this gauntlet.) I am thinking the Dutch might be good for a Sid diplo.

Any thoughts on the research path? CB SGL, or Phil->Lit, or Republic slingshot?

Thanks for the "forest the cow" tip, btw. Brilliant!

With only a lake on Deity, I think you'll find it tough to get the Republic slingshot. With a 5 hill start like what I had, a government slingshot definitely seems to go. If you only have one hill, it's not as big a deal, but it's still nice to pick up research with a Republic slingshot. You could always play as Spain with Arabia and Japan, maybe the Celts also around, hope to trade for Polytheism, and take the Monarchy slingshot. A CB SGL sounds nice, but it's more time consuming to find a good start AND a CB SGL than to just find a good start and go for Writing and some sort of free tech from Philosophy. With that Dutch start on Deity I think I'd go Writing-Philosophy-Literature as freebie and then research my way towards Republic. Sanabas's guide might help someone here for some ideas. I don't follow it as closely as I thought I did now, but it's still good.

Well, I managed a win, which amazed me. 1804 isn't very early, but I played out the first reasonable map where I didn't think I'd get wiped out. I spent a lot of time at war, couldn't keep my island free of the AI for much of the game, and never managed to keep any off-island holdings. I don't think I'll be moving up to deity any time soon.

I can usually do that (hand-build the Pyramids on Deity after the Colossus) no sweat. Building both the Pyramids and the Oracle comes as another story, but thanks!

My first gauntlet submission: 1780 with the Byzantines. Not going to set any records, but as only my 2nd deity win, I'm proud of it. 3byo, warm, wet, 80% pelago vs Zulu, Inca, America, & Mongols.

4000 bc Palace
2310 Colossus
1425 Oracle
1350 Library
1275 Temple
1000 Mausoleum
590 Great Lib
250 Hanging Gardens
230 Cathedral
130 Colosseum

400 ad Sistine Chapel
650 Bach's
660 University
850 Magellan's
1255 Universal Suffrage
1380 Theory of Evolution
1440 Hoover Dam
1445 Intelligence Agency (SGL - sanitation)
1485 Wall St
1575 Battlefield Med
1752 SETI
1756 Research lab

Not much luck with SGLs - finally got one for Sanitation, 2 turns before finishing Hoover, or MGLS - I spent the last 100 or so turns fighting invaders, but never got a leader. My island had a huge mountain range just north of my starting location with mostly swamp above, so I didn't even attempt to settle up there. Missed Pyramids badly, researched Writing at min, max on Phil., couldn't get a gov't tech so picked Lit. The Inca took charge of things midway through the MA, and got Leo's, Cope's, and Shake's by 2 turns. Shake's shields went to Magellan's, then again just missed Newton's.

Sweated out a 100k win by Inca - they ended up with 119k, but Mongols must've been at 51% of them, couldn't have been much more than that. Free techs Monotheism, Steam, Computers.
