Here is a standard size Earth map with realistic resource placement. It is based largely on BVG's standard size Earth map, with modified nations and resources, and a couple terrain tweaks. It has the same eleven nations found in his map, with the exception that I've removed the American Empire and added the Chinese. America is now dominated by barbarian tribes.
I pored over several atlases in an effort to make resource placement realistic. I've followed a "less is more" philosophy with them, so you may find that you want to add a few more yourself for balanced gameplay, but it should offer a good jumping off point. I was curious to see if historically restrictive resource placement would influence the growth of nations in a more realistic way. For example, horses are only available in Asia (which is historically accurate), so an Aztec player seeking to build cavalry may be frustrated...but he may also be wiped out when the Spaniards show up with horseborne troops they built after trading with the Far East, which would be very historical.
Thanks BVG for making the map, and I hope you enjoy the refinements. Comments welcome, as I've yet to play on it much. I thought I'd get it out here early, as a lot of people seem to be having problems with late game performance, so a smaller Earth map seems like it would be welcome. (It also provides a quicker game, which helps us all stay married or otherwise connected with the world)
Enjoy!
