Starting Era

I'm about to start a new game. However, I only like playing in modern era because of the most upgraded military units (battleships, jet fighter, etc.)

Are there any downsides on starting a game with modern era?
I don't want to play through the entire game from ancient to modern....

Should I play on "world" map or continents? (I once got place on my own continent in the continents map.. it was SOOO boring...)

Also, how much bigger is the huge map then the large map?

If you start in modern nukes will own everything. You should consider using a "no nukes" mode.
I like to start in the indrustial era / marathon.

So does no nuke mean that..no atomic bomb and Manhattan project for whole game?
