Starting out

What is a good way to avoid starting by one of the poles? 95% of my games I start near a pole or polar region. I usually play on a huge terra map. I would like to get situated near the middle.

You could always hit ESC and click on Regenerate Map (or World).

I feel your pain. Sometimes I think Civ should start in 6000 BC and let you wander around for a few turns before you found your capital in a spot you like.
