Haven't tried the Europe map, but I think that the basic civ strategies will still apply: grow well, defend at choke points, and fight only when forced to.
Build a lot settlers and found as many cities as possible. Build only a few units to defend yourself with and try to stay at peace with your neighbours. There is lot of room you know.
The Europe map is a big continental map.
Therefore roads (and RR later on) are very important.
Many players use 1 settler/city as a rule of thumb, but I would advise to try and achieve 2 settlers/city on that kind of maps.
