The Stealth Fighter is just a small bomber, if there is another use for it, I haven`t found it yet. I realize it has stealth, but really, do you ever use this unit?

Well, I use them for Air Superiority missions unless of course I'm playing the Americans and have the F-15. As far as bombing goes, Stealth Bomber is the way to go. Jets are definitely not as effective on bombing missions.

Um, you can't use them for air superiority.

Hygro is right; you can't use stealth aircraft for air superiority missions because they have an ADM rating of 0.0.1. With no defense or offense values, they can't attack other aircraft(can't really drop bombs on them, now can they). But on occasion, I do use the Stealth fighter as a cheap strategic bomber for destroying city improvements in an enemy city.

Stealth bombers are your best bet, defended by a squad jet fighters running air superiority. If you're facing heavy air defences, it might be useful to send in some stealth fighters so losses are cheaper. But the stealth aircraft get shot down so rarely it's probably better to lose a few stealth bombers while causing far more damage to the enemy.

I just think the Stealth Fighter was a waste of a unit idea. It has no value whatsoever, would have been better if it was:
F-22 Raptor - (ADM) 10.6.1
- OR -
B-52 Bomber - (BRF) 12.8.4
- OR -
???????????

You can use stealth fighters for recon missions with little chance of being intercepted.

Uh, the stealth bomber IS the b-52, right?

Anyway, the stealth fighter was just poorly implemented. It definetly deserves to be in the game.

The Stealth Bomber is the B-2, I think, the stealth fighter would be the Lockheed F-117. I think stealth bombers and fighters would be used more if stealth came earlier in the tech tree, i.e. before some of the spaceship techs.

Sorry let real life thinking get in the way.
It is a fighter plane but we use it as a bomber.
For that matter take the F-15. Air Superiority, yet there is also the Strike Eagle variant thats loaded out to attack ground targets.

Jack Merchant is right Stealth Fighter is the F-117 and the Bomber is the B-2.

The regular bomber I think is the B-17.

Well you can just tell I like planes look at my avatar. Anyways I'd like to see the B-52 implemented. We could be using them in 'carpet bombing missions' or air launched cruise missiles.

I know cargo planes aren't implemented but my favorite is the Spectre, the AC-130 Gunship. That's the converted C-130 cargo plane fitted with some serious guns loaded with plenty of ammo.
There's also the A-10 (Thunderbolt or Warthog). There's also attack helicopters Cobra's, Apache Longbows, Hueys, etc..

To me, Civ 3 'genericized' the air units.

Also would have like to seen SAM's implemented in the game as mobile units also. Well it makes the skies friendlier but also imposes more challenges to having one side getting Air Supremacy.

Well anyways that's my take on it.

well, civ3 generalized ALL units! With musketmen showing the first guns, and supposedly last until napolean's musket dudes, just before riflemen (though riflemen could be used to mean late term muskets, and the lower tech and more poorly equipped eastern end in the first world war).

I definitely would like a F-22 Raptor, even if it is still a prototype in progress. It kinda makes me wish that the war in Iraq (not taking any sides here, just to let you know) would occur after 2010, when the F-22 is due out.
I also agree with AceDragon, about there being few air units. But at the way that I look at it, if there were more air units, it might throw off the balance of available units in the game. This would probably lead to the creators of Civ III to have had to made more units that were more specialized (i.e. grenadiers and other specific infantry units). And this would utimately lead to some of the peaceful builders thinking that the Civilization series is becoming too war oriented.

But then again, would one extra air unit hurt?

An A-10 plane would be awesome! Being designed to destroy tanks, an A-10 would be wonderful to deal damage to all of the Modern Armors and Mech Infantry that infest the Modern Times. Of course, the A-10, travelling at a mere 300 miles per hour, would be easy targets for jets on Air Superiority mission, so thus the game wouldn't be unbalanced.

Anyway, that's what I think the Stealth fighter should be replaced with.

Since bombers and stealth bombers are too big to launch from Carriers in real life (TM), I edited the game so that the Fighter, Jet Fighter, and Stealth Fighter are the only planes able to take off from carriers. Bombers and Stealth Bombers can only launch from cities and Airfields. Makes the game much more interesting.

Ceasar, did you get that information from a thread called "Them Thar editor flags?"

In real time, I wish they had the British Harrier as the English Special unit, well that's stupid......
