Is there any way to stop steam from automatically updating the game I bought and paid for? I mean it's mine and I would like them to leave it alone! I would at least like to have them ask first. They don't even have to say please! While were on the subject of steam (a most distasteful subject at that), is there any way to stop their:mad:e blasted pop up ads when I exit my game. OOOOOHHHH I hate steam!!

You can stop the pop ups in the menu i'm not mistaken, somewhere in prefrences.

To stop auto updates you must right click on the game and set it to not auto update. Then, when steam starts you must be not connected to the internet (so that steam will start in offline mode). If steam starts when you are connected to the internet it will assume you want updates and override your setting to not update the game.

This can be extremely frustrating to those who have limited download usage ie I used to use mobile internet and as soon as steam started an update (a large update which would go over my bandwidth limit and cost me money) I was unable to cancel the update or play the game until the update was dinished - even in offline mode. It's extremely annoying in certain situations. Luckily I have DSL now and it's no longer a problem, however it's very stupid and frankly unfair that when I buy a game on a disc that uses steam I am forced to update etc restricted on use of my game.

What's your beef?

You can turn those off in the settings menu. Personally I they interest me so I've left them on, but yeah they are easily turned off.

As for auto-updates, turning them off per game doesn't actually work very well, the only reliable way to stop them is to not start Steam while it can detect an internet connection.

you need steam to play as soon as you start it re-enables the auto updates which is BS since the latest patch has now made it completely F up my game freezing it in 20 turns or less! i'm this close to deleting everything and selling the damn game on ebay!

Or you could send a bug report to Firaxis so they can fix it. Also you can't resell the game, because you'll have to provide your Steam account details along with it or else it is completely useless.
