STEVE WAUGH FACTBOX

One Day Internationals (ODI): 325
Test debut: v India, MCG, Dec 1985
ODI debut: v New Zealand, MCG, Jan 1986
Test runs: 10,660
Test batting average: 51.25

ODI batting average: 32.90
ODI wickets: 195
Test bowling average: 34.67
Highest Test score: 200
Highest ODI score: 120

Anyway, he is a great hero of mine, and probably of all Australians. He will finish his career against India in the Test Match at Sydney. He is the most successful test cricket captain of all time and is the second highest run scorer as well.

I'm sure that cricket fans of all other nations will be breathing a sigh of relief.

An average in the 50's entitles him to be called a great, his record as a captain entiles him to be called a great. The respect he commands from his peers around the world leaves no doubt.

:king:

Has anyone heard anything on who will replace him as captain? PLEASE don't say Shane Warne- I beg you!

I remember when Alan Border retired “breathing a sigh of relief” – and what happened? – things just got worse (for us that is) :)

He has indeed been a truly great cricketer and captain and cricket will be the poorer with him no longer playing. :worship:

The papers here in England seem to think Ponting will be the new captain (as he is for the ODI’s)

Almost certainly will be Ponting.

Steve needs just over 500 runs to catch AB's total in the 4 tests - could be a very memorable Sydney test if he can do it there.

It'll most likely be Ricky Ponting. can't see it being anyone else.

things can't get much worse than they are now ;)

The 500 runs will be a tough ask I imagine, as we generally only get to bat once... Maybe Tendulkar's boys will have something to say.

Would love to be in Sydney for the final, unfortunately I leave to come back to Melbourne just before the game

What a great player Steve Waugh has been. It is always a sad moment when a legend leaves the game.

On the question of captaincy, Ricky Ponting will no doubt take over the reins from Waugh. I think the only other option would be Gilchrist, but its tougher for a 'keeper to captain.

If I needed someone to go out and bat for my life, I'd pick Steve Waugh.

Ricky Ponting has been announced as the next test captain.

I think if I needed someone to bat for my life, I'd choose McGrath - at least I'd die laughing!! :)

Seriously, I agree, in a tight spot and even during a run of poor form, you would take Steve over just about any batsman currently playing I think.

I'm gunna be at the Gabba on Friday.
Perfect scenario: Waugh on 20 at the start of play and I sit there and watch him make his way to 100. Then later on he bowls and gets a wicket.
Worst possible scenario: It rains not long after I purchase my ticket (forecast for rain on Fri)
Bad/good scenario: It rains not long after I purchase my ticket and am forced to go to the pub and watch replays of old tests featuring former Aussie greats.
Waugh- better than Bradman!!!!!

I was wrong. Worst possible scenario happened today when Aust lost 3 for 10 in 6 overs. And Steven got a duck. And I got very wet.

Sods law about Waugh – he was either going to score a ton or a duck once he had announced his retirement.

I understand he only needs a few more ducks to beat the Australian all time number of ducks currently held by Shane Warne :mischief:

PS As an aside, did anyone see how well England did, in the end, against Sri Lanka at Galle. This is a Sri Lanka stronghold with Murilitheran bowling and the ball turning at right angles. (SL had won their last 5 test matches there with Muri taking about 27 wickets per match (well 11 in this match). England, ‘chasing’ 323 to win on day 5, ended up 210-9 when bad light and rain ended play late in the day.
This is the sort of match that makes cricket such a wonderful game. It’s great winning by an innings etc but to hold on for a draw against all the odds (occasionally) can also be magic.

PPS I still think Muri is a ‘chucker’.

Yep - watched the last 20 overs on cricinfo - magic stuff, you're right. To hope for a draw is a bit backward, but that's just what I did too, they deserved it...Ashley Giles :king:
