OK so first off i have all of the same issues as a lot of other posters :-(
So having read all the threads (well most) i was pleased to see the 1.09 patch.
However after downloading it when i try to run it I get an error message saying

"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is installed.
The update requires that a previous version of the application be installed"

I do have a full (not downloaded) version.

Please help
Bob

I am having the exact same problem, and I am running a version of the game I downloaded from direct2drive.com

I have the same bloody problem downloaded from d2d as well.. tried callin tech support but they are always busy which is ******** i cant play with my friends at all the reason i bought this damn game

The patch won't work on d2d versions, which is a known problem they'll hopefully get round to fixing. There's an independent patch which MIGHT help here. This isn't an official patch though, so don't blame me if it doesn't work.

The only thing I can suggest if you have the full version is to try reinstalling Civ 4 over the top of it. (Just install into the same directory without uninstalling the old version. Setup won't duplicate the files). Someone else with the same problem reported this fixed it, but I can't find where the thread about it has gone. Did you install Civ 4 into something other than the default directory? It's possible that might have confused the patching system.

What if the patch does the same thing on a retail copy? I've installed (well, I had to come up with a workaround, since I got the CRC error that nobody can address) into the default directory, and everything is unmodifed (no nocd patches and the like...yet), and I get the same error message as the D2D guys.

I'm starting to wish I had saved my $50 and put it towards some other game.

The patch I linked to is specifically intended for d2d versions, which aren't going to be quite the same. I suppose it might do something since you're getting the same error, but I've really no idea, and it could well screw up Civ 4 even more.

I tried installing the patch w/ and w/o the hotfix and unfortunately I get the same error. I'm guessing the patch must be looking the wrong place in my registry, but since I don't know a thing about that I guess I'm out of luck until Firaxis decides to fix it. :(

Any word on this issue? I have the game installed via CD, but get the same problem as Bob-bob. Initial game install took several attempts and was particular about which drive I had the CD in. I got that CRC error then, but been able to play. Now the patch does not recognize any versions of Civ4 installed...

I tried to do the reeinstall over the old install and it did not work. In fact, it made the game unplayable at all.

The thing is, to get the game to work at all, when I install, it gets to the very end of installation and and gives me the Feature Transfer Error: C++ Library, Cyclic Redundancy Check. If I choose "OK" or close that box I lose the install all together. The folders are all there but empty. BUT, If I control/alt/delete and end the install at this point then the install sticks and I am able to play with none of the bugs others have.

Just plain wierd. But ty for the response.
