Strength x/y ?

Simple question that I can't seem to find an answer for...
When a unit's strength is listed as "x/y" - for instance 2/4 - what does that mean? What do both numbers represent?

It means it has x-strength when the unit attacks and y-strength when it defends.

The first one represents the unit's strenght when attacking, the second one represents the unit's strenght when defending. Some units have separate attack and defense values, to have specific uses and go away with the need for promotions like the "defensive" one.
