This might be controversial, but:

Why?

1. The AI really suck!
2. Everybody is going for war!
3. In real life under monarchy almost every city was doing capitalism. But in civ you must wait a long time after monarchy is discovered before you have capitalism as a option!
4. The map is flat! You can not fly over the poles.
5. No natural disasters.
6. No peace organizations that makes the city in disorder during war.
7. Units can live fore over 6000 years without lose some power.
8. The diplomacy options suck!

1.the AI is stupid and sucks in every game!
2.You can win by spaceship and that has nothing to do with war!
3.why is that a problem?
4.the map is not flat its more of a cylinder

7.you reailize that the units is not just one guy dont you? and that the units are just an army and is not made up of the same people!
8.the diplomicy options dont suck its just limited!

If I must be serious then I must say that civ 2 is the best game ever and that I think it's the game I played the most hours. But it is room fore improvements!

I bet 10 years later, people will still be trying to figure out how sid mieeeiriiiiieirr got civilization so good. I rather play civ 1 than Age of Empires 1 and 2 for 3 reasons:

AOE12 is not remotely realistic. where does the populace come from? do humans just walk out of a majic closet in the barracks and become soldiers?

Simple. THere are only 3 possibilities in the game: killing, being killed, and going on forever in the swirling maelstorm of gathering resources, building troops, getting killed, and so on.

No strategy what so ever. All you do is amass your troops and stomp your enemies.

actually, some tactics are involved in aoe. not much, but i have strained my brain for a couple of days trying to come up with some that work:
for one thing, ships, warmachines, and priests ruin the game!

something i would like to do in mp is be 2p,
50 units each,
one character(included in the 50 units),
you have to use your civs tech tree(no going outside of it),
you agree on a map,
your units are began clumped up and you move
...them when the game starts.

5 heavy horse archers can take out 50 of the ai's centurions! you pick them off one by one.

another scenario i thought would be interesting is:

there are 5 of those chest thingies. red player starts out with them. blue player gets skirmishers of his choice, and tries to stop red from controlling all of them, while red tries to annhilate blue.

these scenarios bring out tactics in several ways. no towers to screw things up, just armies. if anybody wants to try these, tell me at board games forum. we will give each other our civs and army specs, that is all. we will have a campaign. we each get 2 scouts in it. we explore the land. in the next one we duke it out on it. i think it would be fun. especially if ther were 2 armies and 4 players! that would be cool! coordinated attacks. or, 4 armies 4 players. coordinated attacks, exept with more units! lets get one of these games together! just respond here!
